Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Oh, high school. What a delightfully bizarre and embarrassing time of sexual frustration. Whether you considered your high school years to be the best of your life or you hated every minute you were in that brick-walled prison they call school, you have to appreciate high school for one reason: teen sex comedies.

Coming of age stories following various awkward and angsty teenagers learning about their bodies has been a comedy staple for years. From Jason Biggs’ notorious run in with a certain all-American dessert to Phoebe Cates’ iconic pool scene that resulted in an onscreen (and offscreen) sexual awakening for the Fast Times guys, teen comedies have given us a lot. To celebrate this hugely prevalent subgenre of movies, here is a list of some of our raunchy favorites. We tried to only include comedies available on mainstream streaming services, but some movies are too iconic to not include. However, you can rest assured that ever movie and show is available to stream digitally — you may just have to pay a bit extra for some. Fondly recall a time of too many hormones, and start streaming.

The ‘American Pie’ Franchise

There’s a reason why we’ve endured Larry on Orange is the New Black for three seasons and that reason has everything to do with the joy Jason Biggs brought us during this classic teen comedy. Did this movie ruin the way you look at pies? Absolutely. However, it also made us more comfortable with our own sexual blossoming because at least we didn’t have to deal with Jim’s dad. The first two are available on HBO, but if that’s not enough warm apple pie for you, Netflix has you covered.

‘Blue Mountain State’ and ‘Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland’ (2016)

BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE, Darin Brooks (right), 'The Badger', (Season 2, ep. 209, aired Dec. 22, 2010), 2

If you love this genre and haven’t seen this Spike TV series, then you’re in for a treat. This comedy satirizes the booze and sex-fueled culture that surrounds college football, basically making it a series-long teen comedy. There’s bodily humor, partial nudity, dumb jocks, and everything to make your own college experience seem inferior.

‘Scary Movie’ (2000)

Technically, the Scary Movie franchise falls solidly into the category of horror spoofing, but this first installment is all about high school. The first Scary Movie mocks the hyper sexuality of teen movies and horror so well, it’s often sexier (and funnier) than traditional teen comedies.

‘Superbad’ (2007)

Does any movie nail teenage sexual frustration better than Superbad? Starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, written by Seth Rogen, and produced by Judd Apatow, this movie had all the ingredients required to go down in sex teen comedy history, and it delivered. Start watching to recapture the awkward horrors or high school but keep watching for every word McLovin says.

‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ (1982)

fast times

Fast Times isn’t just a good teen sex comedy; it’s the teen comedy every other teen comedy aspires to be. What are you looking for? Stoners? Check. Nervous teens losing their virginity? Check. Embarrassing masturbation moments? Big check. Just remember while you’re watching that this classic comedy is based off a real high school expose piece for Rolling Stone.

‘Wet Hot American Summer’ (2001)

whas-teen-movies

This meta spoof of everything that makes teen movies raunchy and wonderful may be toned down when it comes to sexy hook ups, but it makes up for that oversight in male short shorts and amazing jokes. If you need a reminder about everything that makes camp great, this is it. Also, WHAS gets bonus points for featuring Elizabeth Banks in a bathing suit multiple times.

‘Easy A’ (2010)

It’s hard to make a name for yourself in high school, especially when you’re a socially awkward outcast. However, Emma Stone’s Olive has found a way to revamp her reputation and it has everything to do with sex. Easy A is one of those rare woman-led teen comedies that smartly flips the script on sexuality and the pressures of being a virgin. Plus, this pristine comedy has one of the best singing scenes of all time.

‘Weird Science’ (1985)

You can’t talk about teen comedies without mentioning the man who practically invented the genre — John Hughes. In this bizarre cult comedy, nerdy Anthony Michael Hall and his friend (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) decide to create a virtual girl. Quickly their Frankenstein woman starts to take over their life, and things go from quirky to strange. This one is much weirder than you remember, so if you like your teen comedies with a side of sci-fi, get excited. Bonus: Robert Downey Jr. is in this one.

Looking for a new teen comedy? This is it. Produced by Lorne Michaels, this recently released movie hits all of the same notes as classic teen comedies — coming of age desperation, terrible jobs, a hot new girl — but with an updated cast. This movie has guest appearance from everyone from Fred Armisen and Cecily Strong to Will Forte and Bobby Moynihan. Head to Staten Island now.

‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ (1978)

OK, so Animal House is more teen comedy than teen sex comedy, but it’s too iconic to leave off this list. Delta House’s parties, pranks, initiation rituals, and navigation of double secret probation isn’t just the stuff of Faber College legend; it’s the stuff of cinematic legend. Don a toga, grab a beer, and jump back into college.
