Weekend VOD Picks: Tina Fey Goes To Afghanistan And Alan Rickman’s Last Movie

Every week, we’re going to recommend the latest movies available to purchase or rent on-demand. More and more, movies are being made available both in theaters and at home on VOD, and we’re here to make sure that those don’t slip through the cracks. We’ll also be alerting you to the week’s major releases on second-run VOD. All so you can have a better weekend!

VOD Picks of the Week

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

When it comes to Tina Fey’s cinematic career, Fey typically either sticks the landing or falls. That being said, this movie about a cable news producer heading to Afghanistan partially on assignment and partially to shake up her boring life falls in that rare middle ground. When you peel back the lack of laugh-out-loud funny moments and the muted politics what you’re left with is a genuinely fun movie with an excellent cast. Though their interaction is limited, seeing Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton share headlining status after their chilling performances in Fargo Season One is a delight. Also, Margot Robbie delivers a pretty solid performance as Fey’s professional frenemy. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot isn’t going to give you a brand new perspective on war journalism or women’s roles in Afghanistan. However, if you’re looking for a light-hearted weekend watch packed with big names, this is it.

Eye in the Sky

It’s been a difficult year for celebrity deaths, but one of the biggest loses to the world of film was the passing of Alan Rickman. Eye in the Sky marks Rickman’s last onscreen performance (he provided voice acting work on two 2016 projects — the short This Tortoise Could Save a Life and Alice Through the Looking Glass). This British thriller also starring Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul follows the complicated situation that occurs when a lieutenant general (Rickman) and a colonel (Mirren) order a drone missile strike to take out a group of terrorists in Kenya. If you’re looking for a modern day, politically focused thriller that takes the stakes of war seriously, then this is it.

Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made

There are fans and then there are super fans. This latter category is where the stars and creators of this Raiders of the Lost Ark movie belong. Two childhood friends remade Raiders shot-for-shot in the ’80s over a seven year period. While they were filming, the bestie pair had a falling out, resulting in them giving up on the project and never filming the final scene. This documentary picks up 25 years later, finally finishing the fan film and bringing these best friends together. There’s something really rewarding as a lover of pop culture to see so many people shamelessly embrace their love of one movie and, to a lesser extent, their love of these two fans. If you’ve ever fallen truly and obsessively in love with a show or movie, then this documentary will make you smile.
