R.I.P. Anton Yelchin: ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Terminator Salvation,’ ‘Green Room’ Actor Dead At 27

TMZ is reporting that 27-year-old actor Anton Yelchin passed away in a freak accident early this morning. The actor, who was known for his work in big blockbusters and beloved for his emotive performances in many indie gems, was reportedly found pinned between his car and a brick mailbox outside his San Fernando Valley home. According to the report, the car’s engine was running when police discovered the body. The driveway is on a steep incline and there is no sign of foul play.

Yelchin was born on March 11, 1989 to a Jewish family in the former USSR. His parents were nationally-ranked pairs figure skaters who fled to the United States six months after Yelchin’s birth as political refugees. Yelchin began acting when he was 9 years old.

Yelchin’s big break came in 2001’s Hearts in Atlantis. After that, he wowed critics in Alpha Dog and Charlie Bartlett. Those performances marked him as a talent on the rise and he was soon drafted into big budget blockbusters. In 2009, he played Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation and Chekov in J.J. Abram’s popular Star Trek reboot. Since then, he’s appeared in films like Fright Night, Like Crazy, Odd Thomas, and most recently, the creepy neo-Nazi thriller, Green Room. Yelchin will appear again as Chekov in this summer’s Star Trek Beyond. It is too soon to know how the franchise will handle the actor’s death in any subsequent sequels.
