Last week we told you all about how Queen of the South felt like Scarface remixed as a steamy Shondaland-like soap. The show follows Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) as she rises up to become the world’s most feared drug queenpin. It’s got sex, violence, drama, romance, and a ton of drugs.

But we couldn’t tell you anything about the show’s hot antihero James, played by British actor Peter Gadiot. James didn’t pop up in the series premiere, but he made quite an entrance on last night’s episode. How did we first meet him? Well, he strutted into the room, plunged his fingers into a dead drug mule’s bloody belly, and pulled out a balloon of drugs. Kind of a macabre way to meet a new lead character, but we’ll go with it.

James Gadiot visited Decider HQ this week and he discussed who his mysterious character is and why he loved James’s unorthodox introduction. Gadiot also previewed the tension that will define the rest of the season. See, James is the right hand man of imperious queenpin Camila, but he already feels an empathy for Teresa. As Teresa makes her moves, will James come along with her? And can he even be trusted?

Queen of the South airs Thursday nights on USA. You can stream full episodes by clicking here.
