As you may or may not be aware, HBO’s brand new crime thriller The Night Of is inspired by a groundbreaking British series called Criminal Justice. The stylishly moody murder mystery was originally conceived as a heart-wrenching look at the evils of the British justice system. Last week, we lamented that you couldn’t legally stream the first season of Criminal Justice in the United States. (That would be the season that The Night Of is based on.) Well, we’re now thrilled to share that Hulu has put the series back in its streaming library.
The first season of Criminal Justice follows a sweet 21-year-old named Ben Coulter (Ben Whishaw). Like The Night Of‘s Naz, Ben tries to go out and have a good time and finds his world turned upside down when he meets a haunting beauty (played by Preacher‘s Ruth Negga). After passing out, Ben wakes up and discovers she is dead and he’s the prime suspect. The whole series takes a devastating turn from there as Ben is thrown in jail. He must confront the horrors of prison, while trying to maintain his innocence.
It’s too early to know how closely The Night Of will follow the plot of Criminal Justice, so stream it at your own risk. There might be The Night Of spoilers!
