The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has been on fire this week. The show, which has struggled in its first year, seemed to find its stride with their coverage of the Republican National Convention this week. Colbert brought back “Stephen Colbert,” Laura Benanti debuted her brilliant Melania Trump impression, and Mark Cuban told Donald Trump to “wash my balls.” Last night, Colbert brought back the ace in the hole: a puckishly angry Jon Stewart.

The bit started in earnest, with Colbert bringing Stewart on to laugh cruelly at the fact that Roger Ailes is leaving Fox News. Then Colbert gave Stewart the desk to tear into Donald Trump, Fox News, and conservative Republicans like he used to do on The Daily Show.

The most heated part of Stewart’s comedic tirade came towards the end, when after pointing out numerous instances of one Fox News anchor’s hypocrisy, he declared his own theory on what was happening:

“You just want that person to give you your country back because you feel that you are this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that: This country isn’t yours! You don’t own it! It never was! There is no ‘Real America’! You don’t own it! You don’t own patriotism! You don’t own Christianity! You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of military, police, and firefighters. Trust me, I saw a lot of people on the convention floor in Cleveland with their ‘Blue Lives Matter’ rhetoric who either remain silent, or actively fought against, the 9/11 First Responders Bill Re-Authorization.”

Stewart ended his rant by arguing that people in what Representative Steve King called “sub-groups” this week are not being “divisive,” but are holding up the Founding Fathers’ word that “all men are created equal.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will also be targeting the 2016 Democratic National Convention. The show is doing another week of live shows and convention coverage next week.
