Afternoon Delight: A Stoner Gets Pregnant with the Second Coming in ‘Mother Mary’

What better way to prepare for the fast-approaching weekend than by indulging in the some of the Internet’s most well-done web content? Take advantage of your lunch break and treat yourself to Afternoon Delight, Decider’s carefully curated picks of the best short-form content available on the world wide web. This week we’re spotlighting Mother Mary, a divine new web series from the uproarious minds at UCB Comedy.

Created by Dan Gregor and Casey Feigh, the series imagines the hilarious events that ensue when a 31-year-old stoner named Mary (played by true treasure Betsy Sodaro) discovers she is pregnant, even though she hasn’t had sex in over a year. We first meet Mary in her mess of an apartment, where she gets ready for her shitty job and notices a new development when she takes a look in the mirror. After her friend Drew (played by Drew Tarver) attempts to convince her that she could have just gotten pregnant from doing hand stuff at the waterpark, she is visited by the angel Gabriel, who she is surprised to meet in a Taco Hut uniform (the angel takes the form that “most appeals to the anointed”). When her attempt at an abortion fails, Mary accepts her fate – well, sort of. Over the course of the six-episode series, Mary hits the town, gets a makeover, takes parenting classes, finds her Joseph, and eventually goes into labor.

This fresh twist on the Immaculate Conception is “meant to explore how modern people must still reckon with the place of religion and God in their lives”, and it does just that (while drawing out loads of laughs). With gems like “God is already dyslexic – that’s why Hebrew’s written backwards”, this show is not one to skip. So sit back, relax, and let the glory of good comedy wash over you.
