Listen up, Making a Murderer fans. We have some big news for you. According to WISN Milwaukee, Brendan Dassey, one of the subject’s of Netflix’s viral docu-series, has had his conviction overturned.
Though Making a Murderer primarily focused on Steven Avery, the Wisconsin native who was wrongly imprisoned for several years for sexual assault, many people believed that his nephew Brendan Dassey was the real victim. Dassey was 17 at the time of his conviction in 2007 and was sentenced to life with no parole for 41 year for the murder and sexual assault of Teresa Halbach. According to the ruling, Dassey will be released within 90 days, and he’s currently being held at Columbia Correctional Institution. It was Dassey’s heart-breaking confession to the cops, which was believed to be forced, that led most fans to think that the Manitowoc police department planted evidence on Avery and Dassey. Overturning Dassey’s conviction is a huge development, both for Dassey and Avery’s case.
According to the report, the federal judge in charge of Dassey’s case called out Dassey’s lawyer, Len Kachinsky, for his “misconduct.” The court has ruled that Dassey’s confession was “involuntary” and based on “false promises,” which is something viewers of the series have been screaming since Making a Murderer‘s December premiere. Additionally, the confession was thrown out due to Dassey’s age and “intellectual deficits.” According to Chris Geidner, a legal editor for BuzzFeed News, the federal court specifically found the confession involuntary under the 5th and 14th Amendments.
There are no new updates on Avery’s case, but Making a Murderer will officially be getting new episodes. The new season is rumored to have more details that point both to Avery’s guilt and his innocence. Now it looks like we’ll see Brendan’s story get a happy-sort of ending.
