Bob's Burgers

Powered by Reelgood

One of the most intelligent, emotional, and innovative shows on television isn’t an HBO drama or a Netflix comedy. It’s Fox’s animated series, Bob’s BurgersThis September will mark the seventh season of this delightfully odd family comedy, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Featuring the voice acting talents of H. Jon Benjamin, Kristen Schaal, Eugene Mirman, Dan Mintz, and John Roberts, Bob’s Burgers follows the Belcher family, a loving nuclear family with a knack for getting into trouble. What sets Bob’s Burgers apart from similar animated fare is how grounded the series is. Whereas other comedies delight in the outrageously bizarre and borderline unbelievable, Bob’s Burgers is almost aggressively normal. Just about every plot line is plausible, which really allows for the show’s spectacular writing and characters to shine through. A couple of years ago, we brought you our list of the 10 Bob’s Burgers episodes you have to stream. However, that was a while ago, and the animated show has only gotten better. In honor of this great series, here are 10 more Belcher adventures you need to check out. From tongue-in-cheek homages to musical numbers, you’re sure to be left craving more.

“Burgerboss” Season 2, Episode 4

bobs-burgers-1

This Season Two episode shows off what Bob’s Burgers does best — taking a simple, believable premise and elevating it to its most absurd. Bob gets a new arcade game installed in his restaurant, Burgerboss. However, when his culinary rival Jimmy Pesto scores the highest score on the machine, Bob becomes obsessed with beating Jimmy no matter the physical or psychological cost. He takes a mentorship under a loser arcade kid, Darryl (voiced by Aziz Ansari).

MVP Moment: For sure the introduction of the Marty McFly-esque Darryl. When Bob tells Darryl that he can’t actually beat up his bullies because he’s a grown man and they are children, it’s a moment of confused beauty.

“Work Hard Or Die Trying Girl” Season 5, Episode 1

bobs-burgers-5

Gene (Eugene Mirman) and his nemesis Courtney Wheeler (David Wain) are at it again, but this time they’re feuding over competing musicals. Gene feels that the school play is the perfect time to introduce his musical interpretation of Die Hard. However, Courtney, who has music industry connections, steals the opportunity from Gene to create Working Girl: The Musical. Gene decides to launch an underground musical the same night as Courtney’s official one, and things get intense. There are unreliable narrators, so many instances of secondary characters showing off their terrible acting skills, and two of the most conflicting musical adaptations you have ever seen.

MVP Moment: Gene referring to Working Girl as the “sassy sister-film to Die Hard” is a golden moment for the series. But Gene’s “Just Grubbin’” number is also pretty great.

“Slumber Party” Season 4, Episode 9

Confession time: I have a soft spot for Louise-centric episodes. In this one, Linda (John Roberts) decides it’s time for Louise (Kristen Schaal) to get some friends, so she throws the most desperate slumber party you have ever seen. What follows is Louise at her most manipulative as she sends these hapless potential friends home, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory style. However, boring Jessica quickly proves to be more of a match than Louise anticipated. It’s rare that the show gives Louise’s cunning an adequate rival, but this one delivers, showing up how manipulative but not evil this one little girl can be.

MVP Moment: Linda’s fascination with the alley raccoon, which she has dubbed “Little King Trashmouth.” Basically, anytime Linda names anything, it’s comedy gold.

“The Horse Rider-er” Season 6, Episode 17

bobs-burgers-7

Season Six ended with Tina (Dan Mintz) at her most awkward, and it was everything we could have hoped for any more. After presumably pressuring her parents for years, Tina finally gets the opportunity to go to horse camp. Things soon switch from a dream come true to a real life nightmare when Tina meets her horse — a constantly pooping, defiant animal named Plops. After being rejected by Plops time and time again, Tina decides to give her riding demonstration on her own imaginary horse. Tina is such a delightfully awkward and fiercely confident young woman.

MVP Moment: Bob realizing that they sacrificed having fries in his restaurant so that his daughter could pretend to ride a horse. Bob’s constant state of incredulous exasperation is basically every dad.

“Eat, Spray, Linda” Season 5, Episode 18

bobs-burgers-3

The kids and Bob decide to go all out for Linda’s birthday, but while they’re planning, Linda has the worst day of her life. What do Linda’s trials include? Ripping her pants, being sprayed by a skunk, and being epically chased through a sidewalk chalk art festival. Meanwhile, the rest of the Belchers try to track down Linda by exploring her usual haunts, and Bob slowly comes to the conclusion that his wife leads a much more interesting life than he originally thought.

MYP Moment: Gene’s panicked description of Linda: “She has a hook for a hand! I’m sure of it!”

“Turkey in a Can” Season 4, Episode 5

bobs-burgers-10

For most shows, holiday episodes are a time to cash in on easy emotions and coast, but for Bob’s Burgers, they’re a time to shine. It would make sense that the food-obsessed Bob would LOVE Thanksgiving, and the show makes good use of that characterization. However, this being the Belcher family, nothing can ever go smoothly. This year, someone has been stealing Bob’s perfectly basted turkey and putting it in the toilet. Bob goes into full panic mode, blaming everyone in his family to stake out the culprit. It’s paranoid Bob at his finest.

MVP Moment: I would argue the only reason to watch this episode over other Thanksgiving specials is Bob’s interactions with the grocery store deli worker who thinks Bob is hitting on him. Bob tries to explain he’s straight and married several times before saying “Who am I kidding? You’re out of my league.” That level of confusing self abuse is classic Bob.

“Stand By Gene” Season 6, Episode 12

bobs-burgers-6

More than maybe any other show on television, Bob’s Burgers has proven that it can write one hell of an homage episode, and “Stand By Gene” is just that. After hearing about a goat with two butts, Gene becomes obsessed with finding the mythical creature and takes the kids on an epic adventure. It’s an episode that uses the show’s delightful background kids very well while smartly juggling several complicated relationships, including Louise’s battle with her brother and Jimmy Jr.’s jealousy of Gene. The lone Belcher brother typically acts as more of a supporting part of the main cast, so it’s really refreshing to see an episode that’s able to completely shine the spotlight on him.

MVP Moment: “Settle down, Robert Frost.” Good one, Zeke. Someone should probably tell Tina that often.

“The Equestranauts” Season 4, Episode 17

bobs-burgers-4

There’s so very much this Season Four episode gets right, from exploring the odd blend of confidence and oddity that is Tina Belcher to criticizing overeager adult fans of children’s shows (My Little Pony, anyone?) to nailing one parent’s confused but present support of his kid. When Tina is pressured to trade her favorite Equestranaut toy with an adult fan at a convention, it’s up to Bob to go in undercover and fix his daughter’s mistake. It’s amazing to watch the typically apathetic Bob completely devote himself to the world of fictional horses just to make his daughter happy, and it’s one of those episodes that really shows off the love at the core of this series while being absolutely insane.

MVP Moment: This on point monologue from Tina: “Look at what you’ve all become! You’ve betrayed the meaning of the Equestranauts. And I don’t mean the sexually charged, awkward, confusing vibe at this party. I like sexually charged, awkward, confusing things too! For instance…” Yep. That’s Tina.

9

“Sliding Bobs” Season 6, Episode 1

bobs-burgers-8

After finding out that their parents met because of Bob’s mustache, the kids start wildly speculating about how different their lives would be if Bob never had a mustache. A lot of shows, especially comedies, attempt alternate universe episodes, but the Belcher children’s wild imaginations always do it the best. “Sliding Bobs” manages to be completely insane while never drifting too far from Bob and Linda’s central relationship, but the real joy comes from seeing how each parent responds to their children’s increasingly insane stories.

MVP Moment: It’s a tie between Gene’s fascination with robotic dingdongs, which he happily talks about with his parents, and Tina’s choice to switch Bob and Hugo during her story for no real reason.

“Late Afternoon in the Garden of Bob and Louise” Season 5 Episode 10

Because Louise is the least stable of the Belcher children, seeing a bonding episode between this character and either of her parents is always rewarding, but this garden musical gives us the best of both worlds. In his quest to be accepted to the community garden, Bob agrees to hire Louise’s least favorite person, Logan. While Bob relishes his new life as a gardener, Louise and Linda bond over their mutual hatred of Logan and his mother. In a high stakes finale that almost ends with Louise chopping up Bob’s garden, Bob finally realizes that he’s been sacrificing his family’s happiness for his own. They make up and all is forgiven.

MVP Moment: Bob, Louise, and Linda’s song. Bob’s Burgers has a love of great musical moments, but this one is the best.
