There’s one part about Stephen Colbert’s shift to The Late Show we don’t talk about often enough. Whereas on Comedy Central the accomplished comedian and host had free reign to basically say whatever he wanted, the world of network late night is a lot more limiting when it comes to what is and isn’t OK on air. Keeping that in mind, let’s see how many Anthony Weiner dick jokes Colbert was able to get away with last night.

As reported by the New York Post, the biggest news from yesterday again had to do with Anthony Weiner’s penis. New sexts from the former Congressman turned stay at home dad (or “stay at home cad” if you’re in the mood for an on point Post pun) were leaked by the newspaper, dating back to 2015. The most cringe-worthy photo showed a somewhat, um, excited Weiner lying in bed next to his young son. Yes, it is as awkward as it seems. However, one person’s scandal is sometimes another person’s calling, and last night, Stephen Colbert joyfully took his place in the spotlight. Check out the pun-filled rant below:

How many dick jokes did you get? I have six if you count “boner.” It is almost every teenager’s dream to one day be paid to tell a series of dumb dick jokes, and last night, Colbert accomplished that dream in a suit while still being relatively respectable. Slow. Clap.

Colbert then used Weiner’s scandal to transition to the controversy surrounding ‘49-ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick before diving into general VMA coverage. Out of the three stories, it’s clear that Colbert was most passionate about the Kaepernick story, which involved the athlete’s refusal to stand during the National Anthem to protest how people of color are treated in America. Sandwiching this controversial segment between two light-hearted takedowns highlighted Colbert’s ability to walk the line between scathing and relaxed. However, the big moment from last night was all about the D.
