Post-Debate Roundup: Seth Meyers Went Live; Trump Doubled Down on Miss Universe Weight Comments

After the dust settled from last night’s presidential debate, the late-night hosts went live in order to provide up-to-the-minute reactions to every sniffly candidate, every shoulder shimmy, every plea to get Sean Hannity on the phone. Seth Meyers’ Late Night has been on a particular role as of late with Trump commentary, and his ‘A Closer Look’ segment on the debate didn’t disappoint.

Meyers has really found his groove with these desk segments, and he managed to call out everything from Trump’s continued fabrications to the media’s low-expectation game — “his [talking points] sound like something you’d give a murderer at a parole hearing” — to Hillary’s “patented lukewarm zingers.”
Meanwhile, the real Donald Trump wasted no time in giving his own post-game commentary, calling in to Fox and Friends — the only right-wing morning chat show named after a 1970s homosexual German art film — to address Hillary’s debate statements about the disrespect he has shown to women, and in particular one Miss Universe contestant, Alicia Machado. Said Hillary:
“One of the worst things [Trump] said was about a woman in a beauty contest. He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman ‘Miss Piggy.’ Then he called her ‘Miss Housekeeping,’ because she’s Latina. Donald, she has a name. Her name is Alicia Machado, and she’s become a U.S. citizen, and you can bet she’s going to vote.”

Trump didn’t do a whole lot to deflect the statement at the time; his response ultimately pivoted to Rosie O’Donnell. But this morning on Fox and Friends, Trump made the call to double down on his statements.

“[Machado] was the worst we ever had,” Trump told hosts Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt, and Brian Kilmeade. “The absolute worst, and she was impossible. She was a Miss Universe contestant and ultimately a winner who they had a tremendously difficult time with as Miss Universe.” Trump continued: “You know, she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.”
Here’s Machado’s side of it:
