The Mindy Project is back, hooray!! After a supersized season 4, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) & co. are back for 16 episodes this season on Hulu, and we’re thankful for each of them. When we last left the Shulman & Associates crew, Jody (Garret Dillahunt) had just purchased the apartment upstairs for Mindy so she could have a large closet, and so he could profess his love for her. But waiting downstairs on the kitchen counter for Mindy was a wedding invitation — to her ex and baby daddy Danny’s (Chris Messina) wedding! Gasp! So heading into season 5, we have a few hopes and dreams for the episodes, for Mindy, and for her cohorts. They are as follows.
Single Mindy
Last season we got a delightful dose of Single Mindy, and if the first episode of season 5 is any indication, we may see her return. While things will always remain complicated between Mindy and Danny and Mindy and Jody, single and mingling Mindy is the best version of her. We can all agree the dating waters are choppy, but watching Mindy navigate the text fails and awkward hookups that float her way remains funny and entertaining instead of truly mortifying. Last season she had a steamy one-night stand with a bartender, dated a guy who was really into sports (I know), and even did all the best things NYC has to offer with Ne-Yo. So the return of Dating Mindy this season would open the door for not only new loves, but the return of old loves as well, which brings us to…
Friends of Mindy
They say you are the company you keep, which means Mindy is the damn best. But we knew this. Season 5 has already lined up Anders Holm, B.J. Novak, and Bill Hader to return to the show, all former ex-bfs of Mindy’s, as well as Smash star Jack Davenport arriving as a new love interest for Mindy. Oooh! Plus, she’s been teasing on Instagram the return of her show BFF Peter, played by Adam Pally.

We hope this also means the return of fellow Happy Endings cast member, crazy Chelsea, played by Eliza Coupe. And not that we want to see Danny with another woman, but his fiancée was played by Greta Gerwig, and she can be pretty fun, is all we’re saying.
Office Mindy
The return of Mindy means the return of her co-workers, and we’re all better for it. Last season, they brought Jeremy (Ed Weeks) somewhere in the range of normal, Morgan (Ike Barinholtz) stayed far away from that classification, and Colette (Fortune Feimster), Beverly (Beth Grant), and Tamra (Xosha Roquemore) got their noses into everybody’s business. We’re gonna need a bunch more of that this season. Mindy’s co-workers have proved to a fantastic supporting cast, over the last season especially, so more team outings for them, please!
And when they’re back at the office? It would be interesting to see Mindy in action. While she can be rather animated in her personal life, as an OBGYN and fertility specialist, she’s really got her shit together. Seeing her interact with patients and show exactly how intelligent she is really paints the portrait of who Mindy Lahiri is, all around.
Mom Mindy
And the same can be said for her home life. Babies can be a total drag sometimes, we all know this. And Mindy is a working mom — she’s got her day job, her fertility practice on the side of that, and she’s trying to get hers! So to add adorable baby Leo on top of all that, it makes sense why we didn’t see a ton of him last season. But how fun would it be to see how Mindy reacts to him peeing on her or throwing his baby food in her face? At the very least can we get a scene of Mindy trying to pick up dudes while she strolls Leo through the park? Seeing Mindy being a single mom would not only be funny, but it would probably be reassuring on many levels to fellow moms.

Hulu

Happy Mindy
Exasperated Mindy rivals only Horny Mindy for the best one-liners, and while we hope to get enough of them throughout the season, by the end we hope to be hanging with Happy Mindy. In general, Mindy’s self-confidence (and fabulous life) keep her a pretty content woman. But having to choose between two handsome men that are both in love with you? That’s too much pressure for our girl. As we approach the end of season 5, it would be fun to see Mindy start to settle down. Yes, this is after Dating Mindy does her thing, of course! She’s got the friends, the job, the clothes, and the beautiful baby. Could a bit more stability be the final puzzle piece for Mindy? I mean, she’ll probably drop the puzzle on the floor and it will scatter into 1000 pieces, but having someone there to help pick it up would be nice for Mindy, and for viewers.
