Corey Feldman returned to The Today Show yesterday to silence his haters and wound up offending a huge swath of American patriots when he accidentally dropped the American flag. In case you missed the mayhem, here’s what went down.
First, the backstory: Former child star and ’80s heartthrob Corey Feldman has been trying to launch a successful music career. Last month he made his big debut on The Today Show and the performance went viral. It’s the morning news show’s most watched clip of 2016 — but not for the reasons Feldman may have wanted. It turns out that people were mocking him and his music on social media. Check it out here.

The vitriol got to Feldman, who admitting to sobbing at the comments. This week, ahead of his “comeback” performance, he wrote to Today:

“As an artist, if I fail and make mistakes, that’s when my critics have a field day. However, the most painful part is when you get it all right, and remember all the parts, yet you open your computer, and read comments that would tear a hole through any commoners’ hearts.”

Feldman returned to the morning show yesterday to strike back against the negativity. He explained to Tamron Hall that his friend Brian McMullin had pointed out that KISS, Eminem, and Nirvana were all maligned when they first started. “It didn’t make sense to [audiences] at that time, but those all became amazing legends.” Feldman also boasted that through the hate, he also had received words of support from artists like Pink, Ke$ha, and Paris Jackson.

Armed with this new flush of positivity, Feldman, dressed in a white and gold hoodie and flanked by his band of angels, dedicated a brand new performance to America. He told Hall, “I’m not letting the bullies get to us.” He waved a small flag during the performance and then dropped it at the end, sending shockwaves over the anti-patriotic faux pas.

Luckily Tamron Hall was there to do her patriotic duty. She immediately picked the flag off the floor as soon as the performance wrapped.

Feldman was deeply apologetic for the mistake and told People:

“Once I was on stage, my brain reverted to my choreography, which was to throw my hands up in the air with a peace sign. As a dancer, my instinct is to drop anything in my hand…In that live moment, it came off as wrong and for that I’m deeply sorry. It was the exact opposite of my intention.”

You hear that? Corey Feldman is sorry! He’s just trying to save America with peace and love and music! I don’t know, America, can we forgive him? Could we handle another Corey Feldman musical performance? (Personally, I hope so.)
