We’re more than halfway through the first season of Westworld and even as fans are feverishly putting the pieces of the show’s complex show together — Is Bernard an A.I. version of Arnold? Are there two Doloreses? Is William the younger version of the Man In Black??? —  it’s time to start wondering how the future of the series will unfold. One offbeat place to look for clues? The original Westworld‘s sequel, Futureworld.

The 1976 film Futureworld was intended to be a slick sequel to the hit film Westworld. Today it’s considered more of a campy relic of the past. The plot is, well, obvious. After the disaster at the original Westworld park, wherein the mechanical hosts rebelled and tried to kill the guests (spoilers?), the Delos corporation is recuperating its losses with a new line of parks. Futureworld focuses on a pair of journalists (played by Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner) trying to expose corporate corruption during a press tour of the new Futureworld park. Oddly enough, “The Man in Black,” the villain of the first film played by Yul Brenner is back for a nightmarish dream sequence.

Westworld‘s producers have publicly stated that the show won’t delve into the alternative parks presented in the original films and the show has already veered away from the original in many, many ways. Still, we are starting to hear more about Delos on the program. Last night, Tessa Thompson was introduced as a new character, Charlotte Hale, a representative of the board that controls the park. So while we doubt you’ll glean any major nuggets of knowledge from revisiting Futureworld, it may offer quirky little Easter eggs or thematic choices we’ll see play out on the HBO show…
