Last night John Oliver became the latest late night host to grapple with the realization that, yes, Donald Trump is going to be president. Oliver kicked off yesterday’s Last Week Tonight with this zinger: “It’s true! Instead of showing our daughters that one they could be president, America proved no grandpa is too racist to become leader of the free world.” From there, Oliver took a blithely dark look of what the ramifications of what Trump being President means, from shaping the Supreme Court to making the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme song our new national anthem. (That last one was a joke, guys. It’s actually pretty funny in context.)

Then Oliver dipped into how we can handle Trump’s presidency. “We are faced with the same questions as a guy who woke up the day after a Vegas bachelor party, deep in the desert, naked, tied to a cactus and a dead clown. Namely: How the f*ck did we get here? And what the f*ck do we do now?” From there, Oliver argues about the importance, yes, of hope, but to make sure we don’t give way to not rejecting Trump’s more aggressive policies, which the Brit compares to “the to-do list on Satan’s refrigerator.”

The whole 30 minute segment drills into what a Trump presidency could look like and how we can grapple with its implications. Oliver also dives deep and takes media to task, criticizing not only the shoddy job the mainstream media did early on in the election, but how we consume our media. Unlike other liberal-leaning comics who have tackled the election this week, Oliver’s take offers a mix of humor and moxie. It’s funny. His biggest jokes are the ones that give the most catharsis. His final bit of advice to liberals? Not to move to Canada or give up, but to stay, fight, and give time and money to charity.
