After his 2007 conviction was recently overturned, Netflix’s Making a Murderer subject Brendan Dassey’s release has been ordered by U.S. District Judge William Duffin. Dassey and his uncle Steven Avery have been in prison since their sentencing for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, the case of which was the basis for the popular SVOD docuseries.

Judge Duffin’s order is based on the supposed unconstitutional interrogation tactics used by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office on the then 16-year-old. According to USA Today, Dassey’s release will be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office, pending further court developments. The State of Wisconsin will also have the opportunity to appeal the order, which could delay Dassey’s release.
