We all need something relatively good in the world right now, and last night that is exactly what ABC and David Blaine delivered. Yesterday marked the premiere of the magician’s new special David Blaine: Beyond Magic, and it was everything we could have hoped for and more.
Typically, and somewhat ironically, you know exactly what to expect when it comes to a Blaine magic special. There will be insane tricks, select celebrity appearances that end in curse-laden freak outs, and oh-so-many card tricks as the stone-faced Blaine stares on, master of all our expectations. It’s fairly predictable, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable, and last night’s special was no exception. According to Pitchfork, last night’s special included several celebrities, which is a bit of a departure from the street magic-loving magician. However, the only two celebs we care about today are Drake and Dave Chappelle.
In case you don’t have time to watch a former Degrassi star turned music god and SNL’s most recent savior freak out over the magician who embodied the 2000s, let me break it down for you. Blaine first asks Chappelle to draw a creature that can fit in Drake’s hand. After a Meek Mill joke and the laughter that only comes when a magician is asking you to do crazy things, Chapelle picks a frog. Naturally, David Blaine then proceeds to spit three live frogs into a wine glass filled with water and hand them out like they’re business cards. The whole thing was a 2016 miracle.
Welcome back to the limelight, Blaine. We could all use a dose of your stone-faced, super serious magic tricks — er, I mean illusions.
