Meet Queue: ‘Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them’s Enchanting Katherine Waterston

It’s time to head back to the Wizarding World. One of the most-anticipated movies of the year has finally hit theaters, the Eddie Redmayne-led Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Based on reviews of the movie, the new Harry Potter installation promises to be a fun and adventurous period fantasy sure to take your mind off the stresses of life.

Though it’s set in the Harry Potter universe, Fantastic Beasts takes place decades before the events of Harry’s adventure through Hogwarts. Becasue of this, the new movie introduces fans to a ton of new and exciting characters, few of which are as exciting as Katherine Waterston‘s Tina Goldstein. Waterston plays Newt’s (Redmayne) unwilling partner in crime. We know that you have a lot of questions about this new, highly competent, and non-nonsense witch, and we have answers. Consider this your guide to an actress you’re going to be seeing a lot more of between her work in Fantastic Beasts and 2017’s Alien: Covenant.

The Babysitters (2007)

Directed by David Ross, this scandalous independent drama follows a teenager who turns her babysitting service into a call girl service for married men. Also starring John Leguizamo and Cynthia Nixon, Waterston played the titular babysitter. The movie was largely criticized for its dismissive and Lolita-esque approach to teen prostitution, but Waterston’s early performance saved the movie from being universally panned.

Boardwalk Empire (2012 – 2013)

In Season Four, Waterston came to HBO to portray Emma Harrow, the twin sister of Richard Harrow, the World War I veteran-turned-gangster (Jack Huston). When Richard is reunited with his sister, he finds her widowed, pregnant, and in debt. It’s through his interactions with his sister that we were finally able to see a sweeter side to this criminal.

Inherent Vice (2014)

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix, this Thomas Pynchon adaptation is as trippy as it is dramatic. Waterston stars as Shasta Fay Hepworth, the ex-girlfriend of Doc (Phoenix), the film’s private investigator, dope-headed protagonist. Waterston’s performance adds a sort of dream-like quality to the role, making this drug-fueled watch seem even more insane.

Steve Jobs (2015)

There have been a lot of Steve Jobs movies in recent history, but this is probably the best. Directed by Danny Boyle, written by Aaron Sorkin, and starring Michael Fassbender, this movie follows three periods of Jobs’ life divided by the launches of three products: that Apple Macintosh, the NeXT Computer, and the iMac. Waterston plays Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ former girlfriend and the mother of Jobs’ daughter, Lisa.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Waterston has been added to the most magical franchise around, starring as Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein, a down-to-earth witch and former Auror working for the Magical Congress of the United States of America. Now to give too much away, but Tina quickly becomes the unwilling partner in crime to Newt’s (Eddie Redmayne) antics. Waterston’s natural air of authority partnered with her experience with period roles make her a delightful addition to this much-discussed Harry Potter continuation.
