Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life

It’s a wonderful day for fast-talking ladies who love coffee! Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is finally here which means that Gilmore Girls fanatics will finally know how Amy Sherman-Palladino intended the series to end.

WHAT IS GILMORE GIRLS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE?

Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life is the long-awaited sequel series to the cult hit Gilmore Girls. The Netflix Original reunites most of the original show’s illustrious cast (think Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Luke Patterson, Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki, and yes, Melissa McCarthy — and more!) to finally tie off the original series’ multiple loose ends.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE THERE?

There are four ninety minute long episodes. Each of these episodes is named after a season, starting with “Winter.” You can stream all of them on Netflix.

WHY IS THIS SERIES SUCH A BIG DEAL FOR FANS?

Well, besides the obvious swell of warm, fuzzy nostalgia they’ll feel? Gilmore Girls was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino. The writer/producer’s voice is all over the series. However, Sherman-Palladino left the series after the sixth season due to a dispute with network executives. The show still trudged on for a final seventh season that was largely maligned by critics and disliked by fans. (It did not help that Sherman-Palladino left season six on a cliffhanger that made both of her leads slightly unlikable. Did she do it out of spite? I think she may have done it out of spite.) Sherman-Palladino had teased for years that she had a very clear ending in mind for the show. This ending was so precise that she knew what the four final words would be.

Netflix has reunited Sherman-Palladino with her baby and given her free reign to reunite her characters and to end the saga the way she intended.

IS EVERYONE BACK?

Pretty much! Kirk, Miss Patty, and the Town Troubadour literally show up in the first few minutes! Even Digger is back!!! There was some controversy over whether or not Melissa McCarthy would make it back, but Amy Sherman-Palladino gave her a ten page scene in one of the episodes. So it’s a cameo, but a cameo with a lot of words in it.

WHO IS NEW?

The most notable additions to the cast are Julia Goldani Telles (The Affair) and Sutton Foster (Younger). What’s really fun about this is that both actresses got their big starts in TV by co-starring on Bunheads — the show Amy Sherman-Palladino made after she left Gilmore Girls.

There’s also a fun thing where because they couldn’t get Melissa McCarthy to commit to the whole series, the Dragonfly Inn is rotating through various famous chefs. Think Roy Choi and Rachael Ray. WHO IS PAUL AND WHY IS RORY DATING HIM?

Ah, so when Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life opens, we discover that Rory is in a relationship with someone named Paul. He’s sweet, he’s attentive, and no one can remember him. It’s painfully obvious that Rory and Paul should not be together — and the internet has already noticed.

However, I would implore Gilmore fans to keep the faith. All of Rory’s main beaux are poised to pop up in the series. Also, not to spoil anything, but let’s just say that the second episode’s description refers to the fact that Rory is having a love affair in London. (Not with London, but that would be fun, too, right?)
