We’ve all read about the Pence-Hamilton debacle; the tweets, the hot takes and everything in between. And yet two men managed to approach it from a brand new angle, one most people never, ever considered.

“He thought he was gonna be low. Good thing he didn’t bring a side chick, he brought his actual wife,” Desus noted about Mike Pence’s dramatic visit to the theater, on the November 21 edition of Viceland’s Desus & Mero show. Along with his co-host, Mero, these two Bronx dudes continue to bring a fresh, often-inappropriate, always-hilarious take to late night. You may previously know them from MTV2’s Guy Code, Uncommon Sense and Joking Off, or their podcasts Desus vs. Mero and Bodega Boys, but now they’re bringing their signature bulldozer of opinions to the landscape that remains crowded with white men.

Desus & Mero is not to be missed. The two riff on a variety of topics that are listed on screen, in the style of those sports shows where a bunch of people yell at each other about quarterbacks. But for D&M, they run through everything from politics to Kanye to food to internet memes as if no one’s around. Because it doesn’t matter to them. They aren’t worried about offending anyone, including each other, which is what makes their stream of consciousness comedy so unique and refreshing. There’s no monologue, no band off to the side of their dorm room-style studio, and certainly no tailored suits. These two are no strangers to Champion sweatpants and hoodies, which only adds to the comfort level Desus and Mero feel hanging out with each other and in front of the cameras, while letting their thoughts fly freely.

The two do invite guests on the show, typically quite hip blogger, musician, author, and actor types, what some might consider tastemakers and influencers. The same looseness carries over to their interviews, no gimmicks required. While many late night hosts stick to a similar script, Desus and Mero took that script and rolled it into a blunt, probably. In a world where the media is under scrutiny for playing nice and remaining alarmingly PC, Desus and Mero can be counted on to do exactly the opposite and to tell it like it is, because they know no other way.

Shoutout to Viceland and shoutout to Desus and Mero for bringing a show so simultaneously simple and silly to late night and shaking everything up.
