Today is a great day! Today the incandescent indie comedy Other People landed on Netflix. Why is this such a big deal? Well, because it was a surprise! Also, Other People is one of the best reviewed and most loved films of the year. It currently has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and features a brilliant performance from the one and only Molly Shannon.

Other People was written by Saturday Night Live head writer Chris Kelly and it’s loosely based on his own experiences. The film follows a young gay man named David (Jesse Plemons) who must move back home to help his mother (played by Shannon) battle cancer. Even as he’s dealing with the trauma of his mother’s illness and impending death, David personally runs into problems with his conservative family’s values. They don’t accept his homosexuality. Other People also co-stars Bradley Whitford and features rising comedy stars like Zach Woods and John Early.

Kelly wrote a lovely note on Instagram announcing the news and explaining why Netflix is so important for indie films. Namely, Netflix provides a way for new people to see the film and then they in turn can spread the word about it.
