Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

One of the first major wins of 2017 is the addition of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never to the Netflix catalogue. Released nearly six years ago, the film is a mix of concert footage from his sold out 2010 show at Madison Square Garden in NYC, with behind-the-scenes antics including hanging out with friends and family and working with a vocal coach (in between segway rides) backstage before Bieber hits the stage. The film also chronicles his rise from a dweeb on YouTube to one of the biggest celebrities in the world, which is even more true today.

Never Say Never is an essential watch to understanding the artist, the man, and the troublemaker Bieber has become today. The signs were all there in this doc from the start. The tendency to be a smartass, to disobey, and to find himself in some unique predicaments. But also there? The musical ability, the dedication, and the deep (deep) down good heart inside this kid.

I’ll be the first to admit that both my music and film choices are not for everyone and even venture towards questionable, in the very opposite direction of high-brow. But no matter where life takes Justin Bieber, I’ll always love this film. It captures a young artist with an authentic energy for music, for people, and for life. Oh, and also chicken nuggets. You don’t have to be a Bieber fan to watch this movie, but you can bet your butt that you’ll be a Belieber by the end of it.

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is a worthwhile watch for fans of music and pop culture, and so much of what was displayed on screen has foreshadowed what we’ve seen from the career of a young man you love to hate. These are the moments we should’ve paid way more attention to, to understand who the Biebs is, why he acts the way he does, and why we just can’t stop singing his damn songs.
