By now, we know that President-elect Donald Trump loves to tweet and that his tweeting can sometimes get him into trouble. Last night, Seth Meyers went a step further and wondered aloud on Late Night if Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence has been stealthily throwing shade on his boss’s late night social media habits.

Seth Meyers took about nine minutes last night to delve into the recent war of words between Trump and celebrated United States congressman John Lewis. Lewis, a fierce civil rights hero, told Meet the Press late last week that he would be skipping the inauguration because he doubts the legitimacy of Trump’s presidency. Trump responded with a flurry of tweets that attacked Lewis’s record in the midst of Martin Luther King Day weekend. (This was extra awkward because Lewis was a close ally of King.) Meyers cut into Trump’s twitter attack by noting, “And if you’re wondering if it’s racist to assume Lewis’ distict is ‘crime infested’ and ‘falling apart’ just because he’s black, the answer is a hard yes.”

Interestingly, Meyers most cutting dig? Breaking down Mike Pence’s reaction to it. Pence went on Face the Nation on Sunday and said, “The President-elect actually, in a tweet late last night, invited Congressman Lewis to work with us to bring more prosperity, better schools, more safety to our cities.” Seems pretty innocuous, right? But Meyers asked, “And is it me or is Mike Pence throwing a little shade at Trump when he said Trump wrote the tweet ‘late last night?’ Pence knows he can’t take on Trump head-to-head, but he is going to drop hints that he should maybe tweet in the daytime.”

However, the biggest joke in Pence’s statement? Trump’s “late night tweet” was sent out at 7:22 PM, which launched further jokes about Pence’s staid nightly ritual.
