‘La La Land’ Leads All Films with a Record-Tying 14 Oscar Nominations

La La Land, the wholly original Hollywood musical from director Damien Chazelle and starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, took another few steps down the road to Oscar glory this morning, garnering a whopping 14 Oscar nominations, tying All About Eve and Titanic for the most Oscar nominations of all time. Moonlight and Arrival followed with 8 nominations apiece. All three are Best Picture nominees.

Chazelle, Stone, and Gosling were all nominated for their work on La La Land, a second career nomination for all of them (Chazelle and Stone were each nominated in 2014, for Whiplash and Birdman, respectively; Gosling in 2006 for Half Nelson).

Joining La La Land, Moonlight, and Arrival on the Best Picture list were Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea.

Meryl Streep received her 20th Academy Award nomination for her performance in Florence Foster Jenkins, extending the record she already holds for most acting nominations all-time. She’s joined in Best Actress by Stone, Natalie Portman for Jackie, Isabelle Huppert for Elle, and Ruth Negga for Loving.

Mel Gibson, Oscar-winning director of Braveheart, found himself back in the bosom of Oscar’s loving embrace again, with a Best Director nomination for his film Hacksaw Ridge, one of six nominations for the film.

Among the morning’s biggest surprises was Michael Shannon getting a Supporting Actor nomination, after being virtually shut out of the precursor awards. This is the second time that Shannon has managed to score an Oscar nomination after having been shut out of the Golden Globe and SAG Awards, after he pulled it off for Revolutionary Road in 2008.

As far as surprise omissions go, after a whole bunch of chatter, plus Producers Guild and Writers Guild nominations, Deadpool ended up completely shut out of the nominations. Martin Scorsese’s exquisite Silence was only nominated once (for Best Cinematography), and the acclaimed documentary Weiner was shut out of the Best Documentary Feature race.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs presented the nominations along with Oscar winners and nominees Brie Larson, Jennifer Hudson, Demian Bechir, Dustin Lance Black, Gabourey Sidibe, and more. The presentation at times felt more like an infomercial, complete with a featurette in the middle about producing this year’s Jimmy Kimmel-hosted awards.
