Clueless

Can you believe it? We’re already nearing the end of January, and February is right around the corner. For most of you, February just means things are about to get a lot colder, but to the streaming-focused, it also means things are about to change on your favorite streaming services. Before Netflix floods your queues with brand new titles before Valentine’s Day, it has to remove all those shows and movies that have expired. That’s the price we pay for new content, and it’s not a fun one this month.

There’s not one giant title that’s leaving the service in February, but several smaller, beloved movies are leaving, which hurts. The most painful loss is likely the cult comedy Clueless, which expires February 28. However, the Jane Austen adaptation is far from the only big movie leaving. Clerks, There Will Be Blood, Trainspotting, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, Black Hawk Down, and The Machinist are all leaving Netflix throughout the month. Thankfully, streaming contracts like these are always shifting, so you’ll probably be seeing some of these titles again in the near future. Frida (2002)

This Oscar-winning biopic tells the story of painter Frida Kahlo. Throughout her life, Kahlo had a controversial reputation both sexually and in politics. Directed by Julie Taymor, the film plunges into the private life of the Mexican painter, exploring how her personal relationships and beliefs inspired her art.

There Will be Blood (2007)

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s epic saga about the oil business in turn-of-the-century California is worth a re-watch. The movie follows Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), a silver miner who transforms himself into a self-made business tycoon. It’s a gritty story about ambition, corruption, family, and above all else, the power of oil.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993)

Starring a much younger Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, this film follows Gilbert Grape (Depp), an unhappy teenager in a small town who’s bound to his family. Few movies do a better job capturing the mundane frustrations of being unable to escape your family while simultaneously not knowing what you’d do if you could leave.

Unlikely Animal Friends: Season 2

This one hurts. Nast Geo Wild’s docu-series is exactly what you think it will be — stories about adorable animals forming friendships with other adorable animals. Do you want to see a pig surfing? A dog who is best friends with a cheetah? An unstoppable cat and cockatoo duo? Of course you do. Binge all these stories now before they expire later this month.

Clueless (1995)

Netflix is about to get a lot less fabulous. This iconic adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma stars Paul Rudd, Alicia Silverstone, and the late Brittany Murphy. Cher (Silverstone) may be a narcissistic, meddling ditz, but she’s a charming ditz who brilliantly captured femininity in the 1990s without being cruel. As if you were going to watch anything better this week.
