Today’s Woman Crush Wednesday is a special one. We’re celebrating an OG WCW, someone we admired long before we really even knew what a WCW was! But one look at the incredible string of films that this actress has appeared in and you won’t be able to stand up from the wave of nostalgia that will surely wash over you.
In honor of her brand new show Z: The Beginning of Everything hitting Prime Video this Friday, we’re giving a shoutout to Christina Ricci, a gal it feels like we’ve grown up with. She’s done coming-of-age movies, she’s got the comedies, the dramas, the horror flicks under her belt, and she continues to evolve as an actress today.
WHO’S THAT GAL: Christina Ricci
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Christina’s been acting since she was 10 years old, and she’s easily one of the most accomplished actresses of her generation. She’s left an impression in roles both large and small, which is why we’re so thrilled she’s starring as Zelda Fitzgerald in Amazon’s Z: The Beginning of Everything. The role serves as a reminder for why she’s been one of our favorite actresses. As Zelda, Christina is effervescent, sophisticated, and maybe even at the most fun we’ve seen her on-screen in quite some time. She’s a feminist all while she’s falling in (and out of) love. Don’t be surprised if this role inspires you to run out and get a flapper dress to add to your wardrobe!

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Christina’s first major role was in 1990’s Mermaids as Kate Flax, Cher’s daughter! She followed that up with The Addams Family in 1993 and the sequel, Addams Family Values in 1995. As Wednesday Addams, Christina was as dry, bitter, unimpressed, and sarcastic as her jet black braids were long. She befriended a much nicer spirit in 1995’s Casper. That year, she also appeared as Roberta, playing a younger version of Rosie O’Donnell’s character in Now and Then, as well as Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain. Not a shabby year! Christina has also been in The Ice Storm, The Opposite of Sex, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 1999 was also a big year for the actress as she appeared in 200 Cigarettes with Ben Affleck, and opposite Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow. She impressed audiences as the star of Prozac Nation, and popped up as Liza Bump in 7 episodes of Ally McBeal before taking on the horror film The Gathering. She starred in Woody Allen’s 2003 movie Anything Else, before taking on Monster, Penelope, and 2006’s edgy Black Snake Moan with Samuel L. Jackson and Justin Timberlake, a film she spent much of tied up in chains. It was one of her most eye-opening performances to date. Christina’s also been in Speed Racer, and the short-lived 2011 TV show Pan Am.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER NEXT: With this Friday’s release, anyone else who names Christina as a WCW will have 10 half-hour episodes of Z: The Beginning of Everything to enjoy. The Amazon original gives Christina the opportunity to really flex her acting muscles, from being a precocious and coy young woman on the dating scene (in the 1920’s, no less) to a wife who must find her inner strength and power to digest her tumultuous marriage. The season is a real ride, and we’re just glad Christina’s the one in the driver’s seat.
