The Fault in Our Stars

Powered by Reelgood

When you’ve taken out all your emotions on a punching bag, on a pizza, and on your Facebook timeline, there’s only one resort left: cry it out. When you need a total ugly cry, complete with leaking eyes and a drippy nose, these movies will get the job done. They’re some of the most emotional, touching, gut-wrenching, films to date. In fact, if you aren’t crying by the end of these, we’d have to wonder if you had your emotions surgically removed.

Put on your sweat pants, grab a box of tissues and get ready to cry it out. From cancer to young love to a tiny boy with the saddest eyes you’ve ever seen in your life, you’re gonna feel this one: in your tear ducts, in that lump in the back of your throat, and directly in the heart.

'The Fault in Our Stars'

The Fault in Our Stars might be the ultimate cry movie. Starring Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley as two teens who fall in love, who also happen to have cancer, the film, adapted from the YA novel, will have you crying in that way where you can’t even catch your breath. They tackle falling in love, traveling to Amsterdam, and their last days on Earth, with so many heartfelt, touching moments. I even know someone who drenched her entire down comforter in tears while watching this movie (me). Elgort and Woodley are a perfect pairing that are as sweet as they are heartbreaking for the entire film. Anyone else crying just reading this?

'Titanic'

A classic for your tears! Come on. Simply thinking about this movie is the tip of the feelings iceberg that is to come. Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are a dream, that of course, turns into a nightmare when a stray piece of wood is unable to support both of their bodies. We’ve never let go of how this movie made us feel when it was released 20 years ago and the same holds true today.

'Other People'

Other People was one of 2016’s most heartbreaking films, in kind of the best way. Jesse Plemons stars as a man who returns home to help his mom, played by Molly Shannon, deal with her cancer diagnosis. Shannon is incredible in this role, and the movie is so beautifully done, you’ll find yourself crying every time you hear Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” no matter where you are. The simpler the scenes, the more sorrowful they become, and you’ll want to watch it all over again just to cry at the same parts.

'My Girl'

Another classic cry! It will be quite a blast to the past to witness Anna Chlumsky as the adorable Vada, and not the pottymouth Amy she so expertly plays on HBO’s Veep. Macaulay Culkin is as cute as ever, until a walk in the woods goes horribly wrong and honestly, as anyone who has already seen this movie knows, you’ll never be the same. From young love to touching family moments, there’s no way you’re coming out of this one without drenching your shirt in tears. Damn you, bees!

'Brokeback Mountain'

Oh man, Brokeback Mountain. Not only was Heath Ledger nominated for an Oscar for this role, but it was such a breakthrough for gay romance films. It did pick up 3 Oscars for Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, and Director Ang Lee, only adding to the importance of its mainstream appeal. It is impossible to view this movie and not feel your entire body flood with emotions, from wonderful to confusing to absolutely gut-wrenching by the end. Try not to get your cowboy hat wet with tears when you watch this one.

'The Switch'

Ok, this one might seem unconventional, but it will get you. The rom-com starring Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston is about a guy who switches out his sperm and years later realizes his friend has had their baby. And that child! He is a precious, anxious germaphobe that you will immediately fall in love with. Of course he’s the reason your heart will break in pieces and your eyes will leak. The ups and downs of friendships and relationships and the blurry lines that accompany them are all too relatable as well. This won’t be a full on ugly cry, but it would be reckless to watch it without tissues nearby, is all.

'Up'

This movie has a lot of nerve. But, it will also have you crying the quickest. By 10 minutes in you will be a total, unconsolable sob monster. In fact, it will make you so upset that it’s extremely hard to enjoy the rest of the movie, even with that boy’s adorably chubby cheeks! The emotionally manipulative movie might look fun, what with a house floating away with a bunch of balloons, but say goodbye to your happiness because it’s tied to those balloons too, never to return.
