Forget Creepy Kids, Here Are 10 Of The Creepiest Old People In Horror History

The Visit

Powered by Reelgood

It’s become a well-known horror trope — the seemingly innocent child who is actually a dark spirit in disguise. Creepy kids are disturbing and all, but there’s another horror trope that’s far more frightening: creepy old people.

Beloved grandmas and grandpas turning into murderous demons obsessed with death are deeply unnerving. Sure, your kid was born evil (aren’t all children a little evil?), but this is an adult who has been taught the difference between right and wrong and is evil. Murderous old people show off the dark side of free will, and there’s something unsettling instead of humorous about seeing seemingly sweet grandparents enacting deadly plots. In honor of The Visit hitting HBO Go and HBO NOW along with several other M. Night Shyamalan, here are our list of grandparents that will definitely give you nightmares.

On principle, a visit to your grandparents’ house should be a relaxing and joyful experience. That’s far from the case in this M. Night Shymalan-directed thriller. When a single mother drops her two young children off with her trusted elder relatives, the kids soon discover their sugary Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie) have a dark side. It’s a movie that works both as a middle of the line thriller and a decent Shymalan flick. The Visit and several other Shymalan movies, including The Six Sense, are now on HBO.

A word of warning: Don’t eat anything while watching this sickeningly bizarre horror comedy. The movie follows an identically dressed father-son duo, but the movie’s odd father (Michael St. Michaels) is harboring an even odder secret. He’s actually the Greasy Strangler. Seeing a naked old man cover himself in grease and pop someone’s eyes out is not a cinematic experience you can ever forget. Take that, chanting children.

‘Friday the 13th’ (1980)

Before Jason was killing in space and battling Freddy, he was at the bottom of a lake, biding his undead time. The real antagonist of the movie that launched one of the most successful horror franchises of all time was (37-year-old spoiler alert) Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), the deceased Jason’s mom. Mama Voorhees, like most horror villains and concerned moms, hated every teenager who had sex, and she made them know how much she disapproved with her knife. She’s a little young to be on this list, but she’s certainly crazy and murderous enough.

‘Rosemary’s Baby’ (1968)

There are a lot of disturbing elements to arguably the greatest horror movie of all time, the most disturbing of which is probably giving birth to the antichrist. However, you should also add the Castevets to that long list. Minnie (Ruth Gordon) and Roman (Sidney Blackmer) were obsessed with the fertility of their neighbor in the worst possible way.

‘What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?’ (1962)

The women in this Hollywood classic aren’t creepy per se, but they are the last people you’d ever want to mess with. Starring Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, the movie follows an aging actress who holds her paraplegic sister captive in an old mansion. It’s a story about cruelty and the complicated forms of hatred between these two women that was underscored by Crawford and Davis’ behind-the-scenes feud. Trust that Ryan Murphy, Jessica Lange, and Susan Sarandon will cover it more this spring.

Don’t you hate it when an elderly gypsy horribly curses you? That’s the fate of Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) in Sam Raimi’s horror allegory for eating disorders. Ms. Sylvia Ganush (Lorna Raver) is a brutal foe who is made even more formidable by her persistence. The lady just will not give up when it comes to making Christine’s life hell.

Before it was a an epic-looking X-Men adaptation created by Noah Hawley, Legion was a forgettable movie about angels. Well, almost forgettable. The only thing saving Legion from the realms of pop culture obscurity is its one little elderly lady, Gladys (Jeanette Miller). Whereas many grandmothers have a difficult time walking without a cane, Gladys was scaling walls and biting people’s faces off.

‘The Shining’ (1980)

Really, The Shining can be added to just about any horror list. It has creepy kids, creepy shrubbery, creepy dissents into madness at the hands of alcoholism. However, we’re only here for the creepy old people, or should we say creepy old witch. The witch appears as one of The Overlook’s many horrors, but she’s one of the most memorable.

Alzheimer’s is a truly terrible disease. But what if in addition to losing your memories and sense of self, this disease also sent you into a murderous rampage? That’s the reality this supernatural found footage horror movie explores. Starring Jill Larson as the titular Deborah, the movie details how a fictional heartfelt documentary spirals into nightmare fuel.

You can definitely trust kind, elderly people when you’re in a new place, right? Wrong. So wrong. Ti West’s homage to 1970s and 1980s slash horror tells one babysitter’s fight for her life after accepting a mysterious job with an elderly couple. The satanic Ulmans (Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov) are essentially posters for every reason you should never trust anyone.
