What’s New On Sundance Now February 2017: ‘A Separation,’ ‘The Pillow Book,’ and More

Each month, all of your favorite streaming services add a slew of new titles to their offerings, and each month, Decider gathers all of that info for you. Don’t miss our reports on everything coming to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, and Starz (plus our overview of the best of everything).

Even when Leap Day William grants us with his presence, February remains the year’s shortest month. As if you didn’t have enough to squeeze into your abbreviated calendar, Sundance Now will add 25 films to its lineup, including collections pegged to Valentine’s Day and the Independent Spirit Awards (which air on IFC February 25; the nominations were co-announced by 2017 Sundance Film Festival darling Jenny Slate, who will serve as Sundance Now’s guest curator on February 28). You’ll also find pre-Grease John Travolta (The Boy In The Plastic Bubble), Jerry O’Connell in his most-beloved role (Stand By Me), Oscar winner Diablo Cody’s directorial debut (Paradise), plus an assemblage of Winona Ryder’s best reaction shots away from a SAG stage (Heathers).

A Separation (2011) – Only On Sundance Now

In the wake of President Trump’s 90-day-minimum visa ban for residents of seven Middle East countries, even if eleventh-hour circumstances are arranged, Iranian writer/director Asghar Farhadi says he will not attend this month’s Academy Awards, where The Salesman could repeat his historic 2012 Best Foreign Language Film win for A Separation. The latter introduces a married mother and father who are initially denied a divorce, sought so one parent can raise their child abroad while the other cares for the family’s ailing patriarch.

The Pillow Book (1996) – Only On Sundance Now

Fleeing Japan and her arranged marriage to a man who burned down their home, a model (Vivian Wu) in Hong Kong auditions steady-handed lovers to fulfill her fetish of being written on. She eventually instructs a British translator (Ewan McGregor) in the art form, though the film’s plot lines are remembered less than McGregor’s full-frontal nude scene, which earned director Peter Greenaway an NC-17 rating.

Guy & Madeline On A Park Bench (2009) – Only On Sundance Now

Before Whiplash and La La Land, writer/director Damien Chazelle and composer Justin Hurwitz began their filmmaking careers with yet another story of a jazz musician. Despite the titular interracial couple’s brief courtship—a literal song and dance through a black-and-white Boston landscape— this trumpet player and waitress remain tethered to each other, even after Guy begins a new relationship with a mysterious woman, Madeline’s polar opposite.
