Back in September, Matt Lauer was criticized for what many thought was an inept performance as moderator when the TODAY anchor hosted Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for a debate at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Perhaps that was in the back of his mind earlier this morning when Kellyanne Conway dropped by The Today Show to discuss the controversy surrounding Gen. Michael Flynn’s resignation from the national security advisor post.

Citing inconsistencies between Conway and Sean Spicer’s stories regarding Flynn’s departure, Lauer asked Conway pointblank if she was “out of the loop.” Conway declined stating that “misleading the vice president really was the key here,” a point with witch Lauer took issue.

“You’re saying that was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but the White House knew about that last month when the Justice Department warned the White House that Mr. Flynn had not been completely honest,” Lauer said. “They even went further to say that as a result of that dishonesty, he was at risk for blackmailing by the Russians.”

“Well, that’s one characterization” Kellyanne retorted, prompting a rankled Lauer to eventually interrupt her explanation by stating bluntly, “Kellyanne, that makes no sense.”

Lauer once again circled back to the phone call made by Flynn to the Russian ambassador in December, but the results were more of the same.

“You’re starting to make me think that perhaps General Flynn wasn’t freelancing during that call, that in fact he may have been making that call on behalf of the incoming administration. Would that be accurate?”

“No, it would be a mistake to conclude that,” Conway replied. “Remember, in the end, it was misleading the vice president that made the situation unsustainable.”

Which, as Lauer points out, the White House knew about last month.
