Late Night With Seth Meyers

Last night, Seth Meyers took a closer look at Michael Flynn’s brief occupation of the national security advisor post, a position he resigned from yesterday after it was revealed that he’d misled White House officials regarding the nature of his contact with the Russian ambassador to the United States (and his vulnerability to Russian blackmail). Flynn’s historically fleeting tenure, shorter than “a David Blaine stunt”, lasted a mere 24 days.

Meyers honored Flynn’s time as national security advisor in his “Closer Look” segment with a brief highlight reel that simply included Flynn introducing himself at a White House Briefing, and hoped that at the rate the Trump administration is going, the first State of the Union would involve Donald Trump stepping down.

Meyers went on to acknowledge the pure irony of the fact that Flynn had led “lock her up” chants at the RNC last year and then literally committed treason, and that he guessed that’s why Flynn’s resignation letter was just “‘Lock me up!’ written Shining style on a typewriter”. This saga of secrets started back in December, when Flynn and the Trump administration insisted that no U.S. sanctions had been discussed with the Russian ambassador, but that tune was quickly changed last week when it was reported that these claims were false. Stephen Miller and Kellyanne Conway were among Meyers’ other casualties as he queued up news clips of them speaking on the matter of President Trump’s confidence in Michael Flynn.

The big issue here, however, is “what the President knew and when he knew it”. Despite the fact that White House officials had apparently been warned about Flynn’s big mouth and following lies, Trump claimed to have no knowledge of any report of Flynn’s discussion with the Russians. “Trump sounds like a guy who’s being told there’s a nude scene in a movie he’s definitely already watched”, quipped Meyers, following it up with a surprisingly decent Trump impression.

“Apparently, the problem for him is not that Flynn lied, but that we found out about it,” Meyers continued. “You’re the one who conducted highly sensitive North Korea discussions in the dining room of your private room in Florida.” Trump’s discussion was so public that there were Instagram photos of the event; if this how he treats crucial, high security conversations, how can we be shocked by his nonchalant response to Flynn’s indiscretions?

Meyers’ solid streak of continuing to school us on important issues in an accessible way is unsurprising, and his latest “Closer Look” was reflective of just how much we need him in the “perfect f*cking storm” that is the Trump administration.
