It’s safe to say that the current state of the world has allowed for no shortage of discussion on talk shows across every network, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is no exception. Last night, John Oliver unsurprisingly kicked things off with “President Trump: two words that will always sound unnatural together”. He dove into a brief overview of all the chaos that has occurred in just the last week of Trump‘s presidency; the terrorist threat in Sweden he inventedthe resignation of his National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, his designation of the media as an enemy of the American people, the confirmation of his nominee for EPA director, the loss of his nominee for labor secretary, and that absolutely bonkers press conference, just to name a few highlights.

Oliver’s main story last night, however, concerned Trump’s incredibly strange relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. While Trump cannot yet be directly linked to Russia, his noticeable “soft spot” for Putin and the country is more than a little disconcerting. “You’ve been objectively nicer to Vladimir Putin than you have to Meryl Streep,” quipped Oliver, seemingly baffled about Trump’s repeated sentiment about how great it would be if we “actually got along with Russia”.

The problem with Putin is that his entire presidency has been shrouded in corruption since the beginning. Among a slew of other issues, his adversaries tend to turn up dead – or have bizarre things happen to them (fake sex tapes, flying dildos, and human feces on his enemies’ cars, to name just a few). Despite all this, however, the Russian people love him. Oliver proved this by playing a clip of a Russian pop song called “A Man Like Putin”, in which women in all-white ensembles (including what appeared to be go-go boots!) danced and sang their hearts out for him.

“Trump is basically the propagandist of Putin’s dreams,” Oliver concluded. While Trump may think that a closeness with Putin is beneficial, the horrifying treatment of the press and the LGBTQ community in Russia are not qualities we want to emulate (especially since revoking freedom of the press would stop Oliver from being able to call Trump every insane combination of words imaginable). Oliver then vowed to stick up for America since Trump won’t: “America and Russia are not the f*cking same.”

To drive home the point, Oliver wrapped up the segment with a warning for Trump in “the catchiest possible form: shitty techno music.” Hopefully Trump learns something from Oliver’s irresistible tune. We know we did.
