10 Oscar Nominees Who Totally Disappeared

For most actors, getting an Oscar nomination is the stuff of dreams. It’s the affirmation that they aren’t just incredible at their craft — they’re poised for stardom, too. An Oscar nomination can take a jobbing actor from nowhere to the stratosphere. 19-year-old up-and-comer Jennifer Lawrence became Katniss Everdeen after getting nominated for her work in the tense indie Winter’s Bone, Lupita Nyong’o became everyone’s favorite cover model after her win for 12 Years a Slave, and French star Marion Cotillard crossed over to starring in major American movies after winning for La Vie en Rose. So getting nominated for an Oscar is a big freaking deal. It can literally change the trajectory of an actor’s career.

However, every so often, an Oscar nomination does absolutely nothing for an actor’s prospects. Sometimes the buzz doesn’t last long. The critic’s darling of one season can turn into nothing more than a trivia night answer for years to come. What causes this clog up? Sometimes it’s a total mystery as to why some actors are able to use the nomination as a springboard to stardom while others flounder, but many have seen their chances disappear because of racism, raspberries, relationship choices, and, uh, even death. For every Oscars darling, there’s someone who finds themselves an Oscars dud.
