It’s no secret that O.J. Simpson has been a hot button topic in pop culture over the last couple years, and the documentary world is no exception. While shows like The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story were certainly riveting, Ezra Edelman’s monumental five-part documentary series, O.J.: Made in America offered a complicated, informative, riveting overview of all of the events and the social climate that led to the criminal case of the century.

O.J. Simpson, the sports star turned movie star turned accused murder turned convicted felon, has died at the age of 76. From the Decider archives:

While much of our obsession with Simpson lies in the murder of Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ron Goldman, O.J.: Made in America explores police brutality, race relations, and the aftermath of Simpson’s acquittal – and eventual armed robbery arrest and conviction. The documentary was produced under ESPN’s 30 for 30 series and aired in 5 parts. At 467 minutes, it is the longest film to ever win an Academy Award.

Edelman humbly took to the stage to express his appreciation: “I want to thank the Academy for honoring this untraditional film.” He went on to dedicate the Oscar to the memories of Brown-Simpson and Goldman, and thanked his producer, Caroline Waterlow, for “going on this journey” with him. The film was up against I Am Not Your Negro, Fire at SeaLife, Animated, and Ava DuVernay‘s 13th.
