‘The Salesman’ Makes A Major Political Statement By Winning Best Foreign Language Film at the 2017 Oscars

The moment The Salesman was announced as the Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars tonight, a political statement was made. The film’s director, Asghar Farhadi, is Iranian and chose not to attend the ceremony out of respect for the people of his country and the six others affected by the travel ban.

Accepting his award tonight was Iranian-American astronaut, Anousheh Ansari, who read a statement from Farhadi, detailing his appreciation for the statue and disappointment in the reason behind not attending the show. His previous film, A Separation, also won the award for Best Foreign Language film at the 2012 Oscars.

Earlier today, many people attended a screening of The Salesman at Trafalgar Square in London as a way of showing support for Farhadi and his decision to boycott the Oscars tonight. Safe to say that winning the Best Foreign Language category over other films including Toni Erdmann, Land of Mine, A Man Called Ove, and Tanna, was the Academy’s way of supporting the director as well.
