In Honor of Ash Wednesday, You Should Watch ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’

Typically when people think of Ash Wednesday, fasting and religious solemnity come to mind. However, here at Decider we’re a little too pop culture-focused for our own good. As you’re looking forward to Easter (or thinking regretfully about all the food you’ve given up for the next 40 days), take a moment to appreciate one of pop culture’s greatest Ashes — Evil Dead‘s Ash Williams.

Since 1981, Ash (Bruce Campbell) has been alternatively saving and destroying the world from the undead in the Evil Dead franchise. He’s reckless, overconfident, a little stupid, and oddly charming, but he’s our disastrous horror comedy hero. Sam Raimi’s supernatural thriller was almost destined to become a cult classic. Made against a relatively constrained budget of $350,000, the film was screened at Cannes, where Stephen King raved about it. The first campy movie has been called one of the greatest cult films and horror movies of all time, and subsequent installments of the franchise have carried on this reputation. However, there are few things more fun than the winking gross out humor of STARZ’s take on the franchise, Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is an unfailingly silly series, but it’s ridiculousness has only made it more awesome over its two seasons. This is a show that’s featured Bruce Campbell flying through the air with a chainsaw and being forced up a corpse’s butt (watch at your own risk). It’s grimy, gross, often dumb, and those are all the things that make it such a great little gem. For anyone who loves horror comedies, it’s a must watch. There are a lot of great pop culture Ash’s out there. However, not even aspiring Pokemon master Ash Ketchum holds a candle to our constantly failing, chainsaw-wielding, zombie-hating superhero. Keep doing you, Ash.
