If you haven’t seen last night’s all-new episode of Bates Motel, be warned. You’re in spoiler country!

A&E’s buzzy prequel adapted one of the most well-known moments in cinema history last night: The famous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror-thriller Psycho. Singer turned actress Rihanna was cast as Marion Crane, who as film buffs are well aware was stabbed to death in the shower by Norman Bates in the original film.

Would history repeat itself? Not exactly.

While the episode teased that Rihanna’s Marion Crane would be doomed to endure the same fate as her 1960’s counterpart (played by Janet Leigh), Marion 2.0 was able to escape the wrath of young Bates unscathed. And they all lived happily ever after.

Nope. This is Bates Motel not Hotel California, which I hear is a lovely place (such a lovely place).

Marion’s cheating boyfriend Sam (Austin Nichols) arrives at the motel looking for his girlfriend only to discover that she’s long gone. Deflated, he decides to take a shower, which as you can guess, doesn’t end particularly well for him. After some anything but encouraging advice from his “mother,” Norman unleashes his rage on Sam — who survived in the original 1960 film — rapidly stabbing him to death in a gruesome, bloody scene.

“Oh, mother. What have I done?”
