Another day, another controversy fueled by the once optimistic sounding Bill Nye Saves the World. The most recent brouhaha has to do with allegations of Netflix editing an episode of the original Bill Nye the Science Guy series to eliminate a segment that claimed gender is determined by chromosomes. However, Decider can now confirm Netflix did not edit or alter Bill Nye the Science Guy.

After a YouTube video of the removed scene went viral, several conservative-leaning blogs accused Netflix of intentionally removing the segment, presumably to align with views espoused on the new Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World. The removed clip occurred in the Bill Nye the Science Guy episode “Probability.” In it, a young woman, played by actress Amy Broder, explains gender by saying, “See, there are only two possibilities — XX, a girl, and XY, a boy. The chance of either becoming a boy or a girl is always one in two. A 50/50 chance either way.”

As at least two different YouTube videos show, this explanation is supposed to take place between Nye’s Consider the Following sketch on bell curves and a sketch that explains probability through car insurance. However, the version of the episode that’s on Netflix doesn’t include this segment. What seems to be a full version of “Probability” can be found on DailyMotion.

So why does Netflix feature an edited version on “Probability?” According to the streaming service, it’s not Netflix that should be blamed for the shortened episode but the show’s production company. When asked if Netflix had edited the episode prior to adding it to its service, a Netflix spokesperson had this to say:

Netflix did not edit Bill Nye The Science Guy. It was delivered to us that way by Buena Vista TV.

Decider has reached out to Disney-ABC Television Group for comment. We will update this article if and when we receive a response.
