Political pundits have made no bones about the fact that Donald Trump is the first president to not have a pet in the White House. (Or at least not since James K. Polk served in the 1840s.) Most pundits suggest Trump would be better served with a dog by his side to teach him empathy.

That kind of talk takes comedian Norm Macdonald by surprise. As he jokes at the end of his new Netflix comedy hour, Hitler’s Dog: Gossip & Trickery, even Adolf Hitler owned dogs who must have loved him unconditionally.

“You mean people are making the case he’d be worse than Hitler?” Macdonald told Decider.

Here’s what Macdonald suggested instead for President Trump:

“If you have a dog, you’re more likely a dictator. Because the dog does whatever you say. If you have a cat, that’s a free being that does what it will. And you just live with and love, despite the fact that he probably doesn’t love you back that much. So I would say, if he got a dog, that’d be bad news. I think he should get a cat, like me. Look at me! I’m not invading Poland anytime soon!”

Does it matter which kind of cat?

“I guess a cat that could understand the nuclear codes might be good,” Macdonald quipped.

What kind might that be?

“Maybe a Siamese cat,” Macdonald replied. “Wait. What was Siam? I can’t remember…”

You can hear Macdonald explain it in Episode 152 of The Comic’s Comic Presents Last Things First, as well as what he thinks of his new Netflix hour.
