Afternoon Delight: Jennette McCurdy & Co. Deliver Dry Laughs In ‘The Last Virgin in LA’

What better way to prepare for the fast-approaching weekend than by indulging in the some of the Internet’s most well-done web content? Take advantage of your lunch break and treat yourself to Afternoon Delight, Decider’s carefully curated picks of the best short-form content available on the world wide web. This week we’re spotlighting The Last Virgin in LA, a crass, funny short film directed and written by newcomer Zane Rubin and starring Rubin, Jennette McCurdy (iCarly) and Skyler Samuels (Scream Queens).

The short opens with two gal pals discussing their respective sex lives and the uncertainty surrounding what “enough” sex is and whether or not open relationships work. While discussing how “big” one of their boyfriends is, they suddenly realize they’ve forgotten about the other friend at the table – Millie (Rubin). The stark contrast between the duo and Millie is noticeable from the get-go; McCurdy and Samuels’ characters are blonde and relatively made-up, and Rubin’s Millie sports a gorgeous mane of red curls and a fresh face. When they ask her what’s up, she just dives into talking about the new job that she has, but the ladies aren’t fooled – they ignore her job news and ask if she’s seeing anyone. She’s not.

“You just gotta, like, get out there more,” Samuels says. “Yeah,” McCurdy echoes. “My boyfriend thinks you’re really pretty.” There’s a familiar cringe-y moment here as the duo makes Millie feel inadequate for her lack of sex life. She soon admits that she’s never seen a guy, and her friends are baffled. While Millie tries to brush it off even though she feels terrible, they enlighten her: last week, they announced there were no more virgins left in Los Angeles, but they said there was one left – the last virgin in LA. They just had no idea it was Millie. They urge her to have sex because she’s being hunted, and what ensues is a hilarious snap to a close-up of Millie’s shocked expression. “If you don’t f*ck someone soon, they’re gonna kill you,” McCurdy delivers her line with a deadpan for the ages. They resolve to have Josh (Samuels’ boyfriend) come over and have sex with Millie to save her.

Josh (Moonlight‘s Ashton D. Sanders) is more than a little disappointed when he comes over and discovers who he’ll be deflowering, but before they can get to it, a pre-pubescent boy carrying a gun shows up and tells her to come with him. The kid tells her she can either let Josh make an “honest woman” out of her, or she can come with him and he’ll kill her. We’ll leave the ending to your viewing pleasure, but know that you’ll emerge eager to watch more of Rubin’s uproarious content.

The trio of ladies at the heart of The Last Virgin in LA works together with a subtle ease and command of comedy that makes the short a total joy – it truly captures the discomfort than can run rampant when talking sex with your friends. The deadpan delivery of subversive one-liners and the absurdity of the situation combine to make for something truly unique. It seems like Rubin has a knack for things on screen and behind it – and we can’t wait to see what she does next.
