To say that there has been some fallout from comedian Kathy Griffin’s now-notorious photoshoot would be the understatement of the year. The image of a stoic Griffin in a pussybow blouse stoically holding the bloody, severed head of the current presiden has sparked everything from intense outrage to arguments about freedom of speech. However, Norm Macdonald just pointed out something that much of the coverage about this scandal has ignored. Griffin’s photo doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Considering Griffin’s political leanings, the current political climate, and the fact the comedian is holding a sitting president’s bloody freaking head, it’s fairly obvious the image is supposed to be anti-Trump. Her stance and the imagery of the picture also mirror a very well known and disturbing moment in history, the ISIS video chronicling reporter Daniel Pearl’s tragic murder. However, as Macdonald explains in four tweets, Griffin’s assumed anti-Trump stance doesn’t mesh with the imagery she and photographer Tyler Shields used:

The image the stand up comedian is proposing is certainly more graphic, but it makes sense. In Griffin’s current picture, if the ISIS imagery is intentional, Griffin is pitted as the villain. Macdonald certainly won’t be the last celebrity who will continue to speak out about this controversial image —Alec Baldwin took to Griffin’s defense just this weekend— but so far he’s provided some of the smartest commentary.
