When Netflix announced that original series Sense8 would be canceled last week, there was no shortage of frustrated posts across social media. The widespread outcry about the LGBTQ inclusive series’ cancellation birthed hashtags like #BringBackSense8 and #RenewSense8, and the seemingly tone-deaf decision to axe the show on the first day of Pride Month only produced further disdain for the platform. The news of this cancellation, which arrived after Netflix also bid farewell to The Get Down and discussed the need to start canceling more series, was issued with any particular reason, which evidently led to more resentment amongst viewers.

It seemed unlikely that any response to the outcry would be issued by the platform, but last night, the show’s creators took to Netflix’s Instagram account to post a note for the fans and everyone who had fought to bring the show back.

The post, which emphasizes that they wish they could bring back Sense8, mentions that they fought hard to try to keep the show going, but there was no feasible way to do so at Netflix. The series was well-loved by critics and fans for its powerful messages, diverse cast, and interesting storylines, but apparently, that was not enough to save the show. The platform doesn’t release any information about viewer numbers, so it’s impossible to know exactly why the show was cancelled, but it’s likely that the viewer numbers were not high enough to justify the series’ expensive cost.

Fans were not pleased with this letdown of a response, and many began posting comments with hashtags like #BoycottNetflix and confessing they would be turning to other streaming services in the future.

The first two seasons of Sense8 will remain on Netflix for streaming.
