New Movies On Demand: ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village,’ ‘Wilson’ And More

Hello Weekday Warriors, and welcome to the weekend! It’s Friday and that means you can cram your weekend schedule full of new titles now available on-demand. Whether you use Amazon VideoiTunesVudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting to be rented or purchased.

If you’re in the mood for an off-kilter dramedy, look no further than Wilson, starring Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern as an estranged couple on a journey with their daughter for the first time. On the other end of the spectrum is The Bad Batch, a black comedy/horror film set within a community of cannibals in a dystopian version of Texas. The film’s features a star turn from Suki Waterhouse and a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Jason Momoa, and Jim Carrey. And if you’ve been waiting to rent the sci-fi drama/thriller Life, you’re in luck! You can turn your living room into a claustrophobic space station with just the push of a button.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of monstrous action movies, silly family films, and  comedies, and thoughtful dramas now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Kong: Skull Island

If you’ve spent years waiting for a good Jurassic Park sequel, then surprise–that sequel is actually Kong: Skull Island! Okay, the franchises have nothing to do with each other, but this surprise blockbuster captures the original Jurassic Park’s sense of wonder while also juggling complex character motivations in the midst of massive action set pieces. If you missed Kong: Skull Island when it stomped through theaters this spring, now’s your chance to check it out (of course, you’ll have to wait until July 18 to rent it).

Smurfs: The Lost Village

Did you know that the Smurf feature film franchise got rebooted? No? Well, it did, after two live-action/CG films (released in 2011 and 2013). The Lost Village is a totally animated romp, one that’s not beholden to the continuity of the previous Smurfs canon! So if you’ve been intimidated by this feature film series, know that you can hop into this film cold. Or if you are just looking for a fun thing to watch with the kids, then this will more than fulfill your purpose.

The Last Samurai

If The Mummy left you either wanting more Tom Cruise or good Tom Cruise, you might be interested in The Last Samurai. Set in 1870s Japan, this Academy Award nominated film stars Cruise as an American military officer tasked with training the Emperor’s army in the ways of the West in an attempt to wipe out the last remaining Samurai. This plan falls apart, though, when Cruise’s character starts to respect the very warriors he’s been hired to destroy. You can rent this epic (154 minutes!) on iTunes right now for a buck, or you can stream it for free if you have Netflix.
