This uproarious action comedy is nothing short of brilliant. Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as police officers in a rural English village, their quest to discover the sinister truth beneath their seemingly perfect town leads them to an unexpected – and absurd – revelation. The pointed references to the best action films ever made are bound to share a lot of the same roots with sequences of Baby Driver.

Featuring a raging soundtrack and mind-boggling visual effects, this wild flick will open your eyes to the kind of insanely creative magic Wright is capable of.

This sharp little series put Wright, Pegg, and Frost on the map back in the day, and its full of moments that went on to inspire Wright’s future flicks. Wright has cited Walter Hill’s 1978 thriller as a big inspiration for the car chases in Baby Driver, and it’s not hard to see why. This noir throwback stars Ryan O’Neal as a pro getaway driver as he plays a game of cat and mouse with a relentless detective (Bruce Dern) across the wild world of Downtown Los Angeles. The top-notch visual style and flawlessly choreographed car chases are exactly the kind of qualities that make the genre so great.

This 1972 neo-noir flick directed by Sam Peckinpah stars Steve McQueen as Carter “Doc” McCoy, a convicted robber who works out a deal for his release with a corrupt politician and proceeds to orchestrate a massive bank heist. The heist, evidently, does not go as planned, so McCoy and his wife hit the road and go on the run. This thrilling, stylish flick offers larger-than-life imagery that will keep you on your toes – and its car-smashing good time is exactly the sort of thing to expect in Baby Driver.

Another on the list of Wright’s favorite flicks, The Blues Brothers perfectly melds action, comedy, and crime in a way that makes its classic status completely obvious. The 1980 hit follows iconic duo Jake and Elwood Blues on their “mission from God” as they are pursued by police, Neo-Nazis, a mystery woman, and a country and western band. Starring the late John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd among a slew of other massive celebrity cameos, it’s no wonder we’re still donning shades and taking names after all these years.

The Usual Suspects may not offer the same high-speed thrills as Baby Driver, but the Oscar-winning script and performance from star Kevin Spacey is the perfect way to remind you exactly what kind of ethically ambiguous characters this master is capable of playing. Written by Christopher McQuarrie and directed by Bryan Singer, the neo-noir mystery film focuses on the sole survivor (Spacey) of a violent gun battle and the story of the events that precede it he tells to the police. It all begins when our five criminals meet at a police line-up and plan a revenge operation against the police, and the carnage that ensues leaves only one behind. Filled with shocking twists, turns, and eternally quotable lines, The Usual Suspects remains a modern classic.

While Jamie Foxx may not be behind the wheel in Baby Driver, he certainly has experience in contentious car scenarios, which is demonstrated to us in 2004 thriller Collateral. Foxx stars as a cab driver who is taken hostage by a contract killer (Tom Cruise) as he coasts through Los Angeles’ dark underbelly on a series of assignments throughout the evening. The compelling performances and unique visual style make this a neo-noir for the ages.
