Gifted

Chris Evans brings all his Captain America charisma to this small town dramedy about an uncle fighting to keep custody of his brilliant seven-year-old niece. The film also features Jenny Slate (yep, this film is what led to the short-lived but oh-so-great Slate/Evans power couple) and Octavia Spencer. This film may ultimately warm your heart, but it also might bring a few tears to your eyes along the way.

Going in Style

Starring Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, and Michael CaineGoing in Style is kinda like the Expendables of prestigious actors. The film follows three retirees (Freeman, Arkin, and Caine, obviously) as they execute revenge on the very bank that robbed them of their pensions. From staging practice heists involving groceries to navigating iPhone keyboards, Going in Style makes crime look fun. Plus you get to hear Morgan Freeman say the phrase “walking venereal disease,” and that’s just great.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

If 2017’s got you down, why not travel back in time to 1989–and then travel even further back in time, all the way to Ancient Greece? You can do just that with the slacker time-travel comedy Bill & Ted. The film stars a crop-topped Alex Winter and a mop-topped Keanu Reeves as Bill and Ted (respectively), two dudes traveling through time on a quest to ace a history test. With their far out lingo, heavy metal dreams, and slacker chic style, this rad duo helped kick off the early ’90s west coast surfer bro trend. There’s really no better film to take your mind off the present than a movie from the past that’s all about the past.
