Adding a cameo appearance by comedic virtuoso Kate McKinnon to a cast that includes Keegan Michael Key, Fred Savage, and Cobie Smulders may very well be the textbook definition of the term embarrassment of riches, but the Saturday Night Live vet made a memorable appearance on the new Netflix comedy Friends From College.

McKinnon pops up during the third episode of the season (“All-Nighter”) as Shawna, a wonderfully eccentric young adult author who Max (Savage) and Ethan (Key) meet with to discuss their new fiction book. If you’re a fan of McKinnon’s frenetic, wildly expressive comedy, this scene is for you. “Ethan Turner. E.T. Get in a basket and go back to space you freak,” Shawna says upon meeting Ethan.

McKinnon packs a lot of humor into her four and a half minutes of screen time as she refers to one of her assistants as “person,” explains the definition of the term “bathtub moments,” and describes what exactly she’s looking for in Ethan’s new book.

The first thing that popped in my head when McKinnon said “dream team of monsters” is the Werewolf Bar Mitzvah bit from 30 Rock. Boys becoming men. Men becoming wolves.

Adding to the calamity is Shawna’s husband Sean, a shirtless man who randomly pops in and out of the scene to provide his two cents. A few fun facts about Sean (real name Mark): He loves backflips, cheetahs, and is a straight-up master at the lost art of the belly roll.

“There are two things that matter in this world, nipples and butts, and he’s got all three.”

Friends from College may not be the most popular Netflix comedy of the year, but there’s no denying that Kate McKinnon delivers an A+ comedic performance during her cameo appearance.
