If you’re in the mood for a dark, compelling, new crime thriller, you would be hard pressed to find a better option than Ozark. Starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, the Netflix Original tells the story of a couple who’s forced to launder money in a desperate attempt to save themselves and their family. It has basically everything you can want in a crime thriller — anti-heroes to confusingly root for and against, seedy local criminals, drug rings, a weird religious movement, lies, murder, and moody dark lighting.

The series also has something every great drama possesses — great up-and-coming talent audiences need to learn more about. I’ve already covered the addictingly sinister villain that is Julia Garner’s Ruth, but there is another incredible young actress that deserves your attention. Who is Charlotte Byrd?

Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy’s (Laura Linney) daughter is arguably the only normal character in this thrill ride of a series. While her parents are figuring out how they can con all of Missouri into giving them money, half the town is involved in complicated drug rings and blood feuds, and her brother is playing with dead animals, Charlotte just wants a normal teenage life.

She’s a bit frustrating at times, especially with her lack of appreciation when it comes to organic pistachio ice cream. However, Charlotte often acts as the heart of this series. She’s like an angsty CW teen who happened to stumble upon on the set of Breaking Bad, but it works.A lot of this is because of Sofia Hublitz’s grounded but perpetually incredulous performance.

What happened to her in Season 1?

Charlotte spent most of Ozark’s 10 episodes wishing her family was back in Chicago. However, if you want to blame one person for getting Marty involved with the Langmores, it’s her. After the Langmores trick her into taking a ride on a stolen boat, the Byrds start to become more and more involved with the Langmores, specifically Ruth (Julia Garner).

Over her crime-filled summer, Charlotte learns about her parents’ money laundering attempts, possibly loses her virginity, and befriends the man who got her in trouble in the first place, Wyatt (Charlie Tahan). For all of her frustrations with her parents, Charlotte has one of the most normal arcs of the series.

Where have I seen Sofia Hublitz before?

This is one of Hublitz’s first major acting roles. Prior to this, Hublitz has only starred in two other projects — Horace and Pete, where she played young Sylvia, and Louie, where she played Danielle Hoffman. But Hublitz has one other rather surprising credit on her IMDB page. She was a contestant on MasterChef Junior. She made it all the way to the top 10 contestants in the 2013 run of the reality show.
