When Does ‘Grantchester’ Season 4 Come Out?

In the Grantchester Season 3 finale, our favorite dishy vicar, Sidney Chambers (James Norton), flirted with leaving the church for good. Sidney’s faith was put in question multiple times over the course of Grantchester’s third season, and though he teetered into temptation, Sidney eventually made the choice to stick it out with his sworn duty. Of course, that left Amanda and baby Grace in the lurch, but you know, if you’re going to date a hot vicar, remember that he is a vicar.

Season 3 left off with a couple of juicy developments. Besides Sidney’s tearful breakup with Amanda, Leonard and Daniel Marlowe rekindled their romance, Geordie and Cathy got back together, and Margaret started to prove her worth as a detective. (Am I the only person who thinks the show is setting up Margaret to be a detective? I think Margaret should be a detective.) So what’s next? Will Sidney finally fall in love with someone who isn’t German, married, or secretly attracted to Geordie? Will Amanda come back? Will Dickens get more screentime?

Here’s everything we know so far about Grantchester Season 4.

Will There Be A Grantchester Season 4?

Yes — AND THIS IS A BIG UPDATE AS OF LATE JUNE 2018. Basically, after a year of no news and lots of rumors about star James Norton’s availability, PBS and ITV finally announced that there would be a fourth season of Grantchester. However, there’s a twist.

Will Star James Norton Be Leaving Grantchester?

Rumors have been swirling in the British press that the reason a fourth season of Grantchester hadn’t been ordered yet has to do with its leading man’s burgeoning film career. James Norton’s star is on the rise stateside. He’s appearing in the new Flatliners reboot, popped up in Netflix’s Black Mirror, and was reportedly on the shortlist for James Bond. The writer behind the books that inspired Grantchester, James Runcie, told British tabloids that there are conversations about doing the show without Norton. Runcie said, “James Norton is in such big demand now that I’ve no idea if he’ll be available to film a new series.” Co-star Robson Green also said earlier this year: “The series can carry on most definitely. Whether I’m in it or James is in it, or whoever, is another question.”

In June 2018, it was finally announced that Norton would be making his final appearance as Sidney Chambers in Grantchester Season 4. Sidney would be replaced by a new vicar in town: Reverend Will Davenport, played by Outlander alum Tom Brittney.

But, uh, Sidney Chambers kind of is Grantchester.

I know! I guess the feeling is the ensemble is strong enough to move on without him? They’ve been positioning Margaret as someone with the chops to be a detective and that could be an interesting premise for a show — police station secretary becomes a detective opposite the man she used to have an affair with — but it’s not Grantchester.

Still, show runner Daisy Coulam is convinced that the show can trudge on. In an exclusive interview with PBS, she explained that Season 4 of Grantchester would be all about change. “Our theme is evolve or die,” Coulam said. “You have to move with the times or you kind of fade away. Our characters are all sort of struggling with that, really. Geordie Keating will be facing a world without his best friend, but in good crime tradition, he will still have a new best friend to fight crime alongside.”

When Will Grantchester Season 4 Come Out On PBS?

In that same podcast interview with Coulam, PBS announced that we’d still have to wait a year for more Grantchester. Season 4 of Grantchester is currently in production and will debut on PBS in Summer 2019.
