He’s cute and he’s charming, but damn is he bad in bed. Last night’s episode of Insecure, “Hella LA” really only proved a theory that has been bubbling for a while, especially during the show’s second season: Lawrence is bad in bed.

Now, he might have some moves, but more often than not, it seems women are hopping out of bed with him feeling less than satisfied. Oh, and it’s not just a physical thing, it’s very much emotional too. While Insecure fans have spent the last week on social media pointing out the lack of condom use on the show, we’ll focus more on the actual act and post-coitus, although yes, it is always, always a good idea to use protection!

Starting back at the beginning of this season, our first sexual encounter with Lawrence finds him in bed with his new girlfriend Tasha, both seemingly experiencing great pleasure. So much so, that she calls him “Zaddy.” Now, as soon as they reach completion, he stars to chuckle and says, “You said Daddy with a Z.” He goes on to reassure her, “I love it, it’s just funny.” Is it? Maybe it was something different that he hadn’t heard before, but laughing about it diminishes the fact that it was how Tasha chose to express her pleasure and enjoyment in the sack. It’s great that he approves of the word and he’s on-board, but there are better ways he could’ve handled it. Oh, and then he reaches for his boxers and starts to head out immediately after they’re done, claiming he’s been in her space all weekend, which he has as he couch surfs post-Issa. Ok, well if that’s the case bro, why don’t you just stay for an additional 10-15 minutes to cuddle in bed? In both calling out her dirty talk and hitting the road, all with a cheery smile on his face, he’s still putting a distance between these two. You know as soon as he left, she was replaying the “Zaddy” moment in her head and questioning if she should ever bust that one out again mid-sex. As long as it’s not wildly offensive, a woman should be encouraged to say whatever she wants in bed, even if it might be new or unexpected to her partner.

Before the episode is over, Lawrence finds himself at Issa’s apartment to pick up his mail and some items he left in the bathroom and also bone Issa real quick. And I mean real quick. Look, we’ll give Lawrence this one: perhaps the show wasn’t exactly portraying how long this interaction would be in real life, and it was simply an on-screen quickie. But it lasted for about 20 pumps. 20 hot pumps, but still. It equates to approximately 25 seconds of penetration on-screen. Yes, there was a lot of passion and other emotions built up there, so it makes sense that it wouldn’t be a long, drawn-out, romantic moment. It was always going to be speedy and confusing. But yikes, that seems a bit fast, no? And then again with the silently pulling up his boxers and walking out. For such a hot sex scene, Lawrence sure knows how to get things to cool back down right away.

It should be pointed out that Jay Ellis’ acting is what truly makes these sex scenes what they are. It’s never boring to watch him get it on, and the fact that some viewers want to root for him is only what makes these moments that much more frustrating (and sexy, if we’re being honest). His attractiveness is what makes us secretly happy he doesn’t always succeed in bed — maybe this dude can’t have it all! And yet, it’s because we know he’ll be fine with the ladies that we don’t waste a minute feeling bad for him when he’s speedy or soft.

But that brings us to last night’s three-way gone wrong. Lawrence can’t pay for his groceries, so the two nice ladies behind him pick up the tab. After a brief and flirty encounter in the parking lot, Lawrence decides to ditch his bud and hang out with these gals, and a little bit of sexy dancing to The Weeknd quickly turns into a threesome. However, all involved and observing should’ve known it was off to a bad start when as soon as the first woman starts to kiss Lawrence, Siri goes off on his phone. But your damn phone away, guy. You’re about to get laid!

Again, we witness an interaction where Lawrence can be a bit more accepting and encouraging, as he gives the first woman an “OK,” to her lively dirty talk. Get into it, bro! She’s giving it her all, you can contribute at least a few pleased moans to the room. They both finish, which is a great thing for the woman #1… but not so much for woman #2 and Lawrence. You see, she is ready for her turn and he very much is not. She immediately states “This is bullshit,” and it’s hard not to agree with her. Is she asking for too much? Maybe, but she does have the research to back her disappointment up, noting, “What’s the problem, we’ve been with a bunch of other black guys that can come and keep going.” Damn!

Now, to his credit, Lawrence is probably the type of guy that does pride himself on being able to get a woman to completion. But let’s not forget, this guy’s default mode is just thinking of himself and not worrying too too much about the feelings and needs of those around him. The threesome was a mix of this. He knew he rocked woman #1’s world, and thought his job was done. Not so, my friend. But now he knows for next time, should there be a next time.

And there very well could be! We’re consistently reminded on Insecure that this is a man who might seem a bit shy at first, but it’s all part of his charm, and a tool he uses to flirt with women. We can only hope that Issa will not be one of the ones that falls for it again. But to the ones that do, manage your expectations in the bedroom, and be careful with that dirty talk. It’s just a matter of seconds before this guy will be pulling up his boxer briefs.
