Netflix‘s teen dramedy series Atypical only dropped its first season Friday, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from buzzing about when they’ll have more episodes to devour. The series tells the story of Sam (Keir Gilchrist), an autistic 18-year-old trying to date for the first time and stay afloat in high school’s brutal waters. We also get up close and personal with his family; Michael Rapaport plays Sam’s dad, Oscar winner Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Sam’s struggling mom, and up-and-comer Brigette Lundy-Paine steals the show as Sam’s younger sister, Casey.

The first season certainly left viewers with more to learn about the Gardners’ future and how Sam’s independence will change the course of his life, so it’s no surprise that binge-watchers are already clamoring for a Season 2. Will Netflix renew its latest original for a second season? Here’s what we know so far.

Will Atypical return to Netflix for Season 2?

There’s no way to know yet. Since the show only came out a few days ago, it’s way too early to tell whether or not Netflix will renew Atypical for a second season. In the past, Netflix generally boasted a reputation for renewing pretty much all of their shows after one season, but recent cutbacks – including the cancelling of Gypsy and Girlboss after just one season each and Sense8 and The Get Down after 2 – indicate that they are being much more conservative when it comes to what they decide to renew. While the series has been critically middling, it does seem to be drawing in a large audience – which is important when it comes to deciding what stays and what gets axed.

When will Atypical Season 2 hit Netflix if it does get renewed?

Netflix tends to follow an annual pattern, meaning that seasons of their shows usually have release dates about a year apart. If Atypical is renewed for a second season, it’s likely that we’ll be reunited with the Gardners sometime in summer 2018.

Why hasn’t Netflix renewed Atypical yet?

Believe or not, the streaming giant typically takes their time when it comes to announcing series renewals. While GLOW‘s second season announcement arrived pretty promptly, Netflix hasn’t even officially announced whether or not smash hit House of Cards has been renewed for a sixth season (though it would frankly be a shocker if they ditched the show that put them on the map now).

Because many of Netflix’s original series are co-produced with other studios and companies, they often have to wait for deals to get inked, budgets to be made, and actors’ schedules to be confirmed before they can make any confirmation of a new season. Atypical is no different; it hasn’t even been a week since the series came out, and it still needs time to prove its success for the platform. It’s likely that a lot goes into the green-light vs. cancellation decision-making process at Netflix – including a healthy combination of numbers, critical praise, and economic sustainability – so there’s no way to know yet which direction Atypical will head.

Decider will update this article if and when Netflix announces plans for Atypical‘s future.
